Inspiration
Everyone has been sent out for bread and come back with anything but bread. We wanted a game about that one errand that never goes to plan.
The look of the game comes from the town I grew up in, and many of the situations actually happened to me, especially when I went out with my friends.
What it does
Bread2Go is a comedy platformer for Android. Mum sends Vanya out for bread. On the way:
- roofs to run across and power lines to slide down
- garage cats and rats
- four errands for the neighbours
- a slingshot you have to earn: 5 hits in 20 seconds
At the shop there is no bread. The day ends with a stats screen: time, coins, errands, deaths and accuracy.
Monetization
One in-app purchase through RevenueCat: "Buy the hero some bread". Vanya gets a loaf-shaped hat he wears everywhere and the Bread Patron achievement.
It unlocks nothing and skips nothing. For now, it's the only way he ever gets bread.
How we built it
- Godot 4 and GDScript
- RevenueCat plugin on top of Google Play Billing
- hand-drawn pixel art
- AI tools during development: Claude Code and Gemini
Challenges we ran into
- Texture memory. Phones ran out of it, so we cut it from 263 MB to 94 MB.
- The invisible hat. The purchase went through, but the hat never appeared: the plugin only reports an entitlement when asked. We found that by reading its bytecode.
- Getting public. Google Play wants 14 days of closed testing before a new app can be released to everyone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A full playable day, shipped to Google Play production during Shipaton, with a real purchase that works end to end, promo codes included.
What we learned
- Test on a real phone early. Memory, screen size and purchases all behave differently there.
- Test purchases the right way: with license testers and promo codes, not your own account.
- Listen to testers. Take their feedback and keep changing the game until it's comfortable and fun to play.
What's next for Bread2Go
Nine more days from our script:
- a country road
- a village
- a railway station
- a market
- an industrial zone
- a supermarket
- the city centre
- a friend's place
- a final boss fight with the shop assistant
Then Vanya finally gets home. We won't spoil what Mum says.
