Inspiration

Our project was inspired by Brass which is a board game set in Lancashire, England during the Industrial Revolution.

What it does

Brassworld is a web-based strategy game centered on global industry. Players can build industries and connect cities. We added accessibility features such as high contrast, larger text, reduced motion, and keyboard navigation. We also introduced a “pollution level” to bring environmental ideas into the game.

How we built it

We adapted the existing Brass board game into a web game and updated its interface, map controls, and accessibility settings.

Challenges we ran into

Enlarging the text affected the layout of the map, action cards, and buttons. We reviewed and adjusted these areas to keep the text readable without disrupting gameplay.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to have added several accessibility options to a strategy game and incorporated environmental themes into its industrial setting.

What we learned

We learned that accessibility needs to be considered throughout the entire game experience, not just added as a settings menu. Even a small change can affect many parts of a complex interface, including the map and cards.

What's next for Brassworld

We hope to develop the econ mode, invite more players to try the game, and improve keyboard, screen-reader, and mobile accessibility.
