My high school has a benchmark project called the 'Change Project', which involves students reaching out to organizations in the community, in order to make a change that they would like to see implemented. However, many students were not able to connect with these organization, causing them to not to be able to execute the changes they had visualized. The problem was also that these organizations need volunteers to keep running and impacting the community in a positive way.
What it does
Branch connects organizations to people who would like to volunteer there. They can pick which places align with their interests, submit hours, and find locations near them through an interactive map. Their hours will be ranked up in a leaderboard, which will provide a reward system for the individual. The organizations can also track the progress of how many people volunteer through a branch graph.
Ultimately, there are many problems in the world, and there are also many solutions. But what is missing? That one branch that links the two. Our app branches these two together, causing a net good in the community, country, and world.
How we built it
Being beginners in coding, we used Xcode and Swift to code this app.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many errors in our code, especially when implementing the interactive maps. We also ran into a couple sig abrts - errors that make u look through all the code to figure out what as wrong. Throughout the hackathon, we learned to solve these errors - overcoming our challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are so proud that we got this far. None of us are experienced in using Xcode, much less being able to implement a working, interactive map that pertained to individual's interest and used realtime feedback.
What we learned
We learned to use Xcode, code in Swift, and implement an interactive Map.
What's next for BRANCH
Branch does have a long way to go. We want to be able to take this app to the next level and actually implement it in the community. This will require a lot of technical knowledge, but we believe that this app can make a difference in the community. One of the purposes of this app is to incentify people to volunteer. When we put this app out there, we want to be able to receive funding from bigger companies to allow for a small reward for a certain amount of hours that Volunteers contribute. For example, volunteers can receive a $15 Amazon gift card for 25 hours that they contributed.
