Inspiration
Branch Buddy was inspired by the support systems we've been able to build and confide in on campus with networks like W@CC and SWE. We reflected on how a similar network would have been useful in our teenage years to have peers with relatable experiences to talk through changes, call after a rough day, and give advice on good questions to ask at a healthcare visit.
What it does
The Branch Buddy portal pairs users based on availability and volunteered demographic information or experiences that may be helpful to the Buddy in need of support.
How I built it
We used Figma for basic design and IFTTT to enable real time pairings for those who may have an urgent need without yet having made a profile. Posts are filtered through the hashtag #branchbuddy and pairs are made quickly through the Branch Buddy social media pages.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into the issue of addressing many concerns at once and took the advice to use the agile approach, targeting the main challenge we wanted to solve: lack of support.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud to have built on an idea that support's teens/women through the sometimes confusing healthcare environment while providing a space for empowerment.
What I learned
We learned that you wont know whether an idea/code meets your requirements until you have a tangible product which is what made the agile approach useful to our team.
What's next for Branch Buddy
We would like to build a working website/app and further test the IFTTT functionality with reposting real-time requests for a #branchbuddy.
