Inspiration

AI coding agents can produce fast repository answers, but those answers are difficult to trust when the evidence boundary is unclear. Developers are often forced to choose between sending broad source context to a remote model or accepting conclusions that are hard to reproduce and validate.

BRAN was created to provide a trustworthy local evidence layer between a repository and an AI coding workflow.

What it does

BRAN turns local repositories into focused, reproducible developer intelligence through:

  • deterministic local repository scanning
  • focused evidence packets instead of whole-repository context dumps
  • validation and explicit readiness reporting
  • a headless bran executable for agents, scripts, and automation
  • an optional terminal interface for human exploration
  • offline, read-only operation without requiring an agent account
  • honest capability reporting rather than simulated integrations

The complete BRAN product demonstration and technical evidence are available in the public GitHub repository.

Why it matters

BRAN gives developers and coding agents a smaller, safer, and more inspectable repository context. Conclusions can be traced back to concrete source evidence, repeated through deterministic commands, and validated before they are used in engineering decisions.

This makes BRAN particularly useful for privacy-sensitive repositories, security reviews, architecture analysis, onboarding, debugging, and agentic development workflows where trust and reproducibility matter.

How it works

BRAN is implemented as a Rust developer tool with a headless executable and optional TUI. A typical evaluation path is:

  1. Run the repository checks.
  2. Execute the BRAN smoke command to produce a versioned JSON envelope.
  3. Start the terminal interface or use the headless commands.
  4. Inspect local readiness and agent integration status using the doctor commands.
  5. Review the focused repository evidence and validation output.

BRAN uses deterministic scanning as the foundation and reserves probabilistic AI reasoning for interpreting bounded evidence. This separation reduces irrelevant context, improves repeatability, and makes the resulting intelligence easier to audit.

Trust, privacy, and responsible AI

BRAN defaults to offline, read-only operation with zero conversation retention. Provider, authentication, network-call, and unavailable-capability information remain explicit. Missing capability is reported as unavailable rather than being fabricated.

This design treats AI as a reasoning layer over verifiable repository evidence—not as an unquestioned source of truth.

Codex and GPT-5.6

Codex and GPT-5.6 were used to accelerate repository analysis, implementation review, validation planning, product positioning, and preparation of the developer-facing evidence and submission materials. The owner retained the key product, privacy, architecture, and trust decisions. BRAN's central design choice—deterministic local evidence before model interpretation—was deliberately preserved throughout development.

Technical evidence and testing

The public repository is the complete source for the product demonstration, technical evidence, README, tests, and runnable experience:

https://github.com/alphazede/developers/tree/main/bran

From the repository root, judges can run:

./tools/ci/check.sh --fast
cargo run --quiet --manifest-path bran/Cargo.toml --bin bran -- smoke
cargo run --quiet --manifest-path bran/Cargo.toml --bin bran -- tui

Additional read-only readiness checks include:

bran doctor --onboarding
bran doctor --agent
bran agents list

Built for the Developer Tools track

BRAN combines developer productivity, DevOps readiness, responsible AI, privacy, security-minded defaults, and agentic workflows in a complete runnable product. It is not merely an AI wrapper: it is an evidence system that makes repository intelligence more trustworthy.
