Inspiration
Many existing solutions on the market are just mobile games. Braining Up takes a very different, research-based approach: we collaborate with a PhD from Adam Mickiewicz University, one of Poland’s top universities, to ensure our exercises are scientifically grounded. Our goal is to create an app that combines rigorous cognitive training with engaging daily practice.
What it does
Braining Up provides users with daily brain exercises designed to improve memory, attention, problem-solving, and other cognitive skills. The app adapts to each user’s level, offering personalized challenges that are both fun and effective. With a mix of puzzles, logic challanges, and memory tasks, Braining Up makes it easy to keep your brain active every day. Personalized daily exercises, engaging challenges, achievements, badges, challenges and detailed statistics that help users track their progress and stay motivated.
How we built it
We built Braining Up as a mobile-first app using Flutter, which allows us to deliver a smooth and consistent experience on both iOS and Android. The brain exercises are powered by a robust backend written in Java that tracks user progress and adapts difficulty in real time. To ensure reliability and scalability, we integrated Firebase services: authentication for secure and seamless user logins, Firestore and Storage for safe data management, and Crashlytics and Analytics for monitoring app performance, tracking engagement, and understanding how users interact with the exercises. Combined with scientific input from our collaborator at Adam Mickiewicz University, every challenge is grounded in cognitive research, bringing together technology, science, and data-driven insights into one seamless experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was balancing scientific rigor with user engagement. We wanted exercises to be research-backed but also fun and motivating for daily use. Another challenge was creating adaptive algorithms that adjust difficulty based on individual performance, ensuring that every user feels appropriately challenged without frustration. Finally, integrating real-time tracking of progress and performance across multiple devices required careful planning of our backend architecture.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating an app that successfully combines scientific research with engaging daily brain exercises. Braining Up now offers personalized challenges that adapt to each user’s level, helping them build cognitive skills consistently. Collaborating with a top university researcher ensured that our exercises are not only fun but also effective. Finally, we managed to launch a smooth, cross-platform app in 2 months.
What we learned
Building Braining Up taught us the importance of blending science and design. We learned how crucial it is to make research-backed exercises enjoyable and accessible, so users stay motivated over time. We also gained experience in creating adaptive algorithms that respond to user performance and in building a robust cross-platform mobile app. Most importantly, we learned that collaboration with experts can greatly elevate the quality and credibility of a product.
What's next for Braining Up
Next, we plan to expand Braining Up with more exercises(around 40, right now we have 5 more under development) and new ways to keep users engaged, such as personalized notifications and reminders. We’re also developing a separate exercise module where users can progress through levels, applying the knowledge and skills they’ve already gained. Additionally, we aim to provide more in-depth analytics so users can track their cognitive growth over time. We are launching a blog featuring research insights and a module where users can participate in studies, contributing to ongoing research at Adam Mickiewicz University.
