Inspiration
Our inspiration is that many college students are unable to keep up with their peers due to limited resources, which would allow them to succeed. Many students have access to tutors and study groups to help with understanding the material. And with the students who are unable to have these rescources we wanted to create a substitute that would allow them to not feel as if they are the only ones struggling.
What it does
Brain Space is a website designed for college students to gain access to
study tools that they may not have access to. Our main focus is on these students. To bridge a digital gap, educational gap, and to help with mental health. It allows for these students who may feel behind to be able to understand that there are people who are struggling just like them. People who do need help, who don't understand the same concept as them. It gives the students who do not feel confident in themselves to know that there are people who are struggling too. It also allows for AI study tools to help a student who may not understand a concept to better understand it. It gives the students who only have a few hours of study time a day, to understand the concepts just as much as the student who goes to the lectures. It also allows for students who are bad note takers or have a hard time paying attention in class to use a tool that allows for more of an understanding of the concepts. It provides more equity for all college students to have access to educational resources to students from all backgrounds.
How we built it
Brain Space is an AI-powered platform. We used AI to structure the platform's architecture, build out the user friendly feautures. AI allowed for the creation of our website. It used the concepts we told it to create a functional website that allows for there to be bridge in education and digital. We are not experts in webdevelopment but with AI to help in creating the website, we imagined it allowed us to bridge the gap in knowledge required to do something like this.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we ran into while building Brain Space was the limitation of the AI tools we were able to use. For example, files uploaded are currently capped at up to one megabyte. This, is a major restriction for the platform. Meaning only simple small text-based notes can be uploaded. Along with not being able to see the preview of the notes to see how it looks like. Another challenge is building a login for the users to be able to save notes or having a personal profile so they can customize their classes and preferences.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments that we're proud of are the website itself. This project represents the proof that ideas such as this one, which provide equity to all college students, no matter their background or status, are able to understand the material that is being taught. This is a good first step of many to provide this form of educational equity and build a bridge in this digital divide that is in the educational system. It give the opportunity for students who may not have access to tutors, study groups, or online services that require payment. It gives more than just notes to use for study, it gives a chance at success. And that is a big accomplishment we are proud of.
What we learned
We learned how to build a website using AI, along with finding a need that would benefit college students who need assistance in studying. We learned how to take an abstract idea and to use an AI to help create it. It allowed us as well concepts such as iterations, because although AI did build it, there were still minor issues and spelling mistakes we had to correct. As well, it took multiple attempts to get the website just right for users to use. Working out problems and solving them allowed us to understand the whole process behind a website.
What's next for Brain Space
What is next for Brain Space is to allow for larger files to be uploaded. Features that allow for different user preferences, such as themes and custom themes like dark mode, the useres own personal background for the website. More users are able to sign in to the website. Also allowing for more tags to be created so users can narrow down what class the notes are for, for what school, for what teacher, and for different languages of notes. Along with the AI study tool, to have different modes, such as a quick response or a deep response. Each one has a quick responses answer quickly but may get it wrong. Deep responses may take longer, but would allow for a simpler response to the prompt. Each one having their own use. With the proper capacities, we plan to launch at all CSU and UC colleges with sign-ups that automatically enrolls you with an AI Study-Bot
