INSPIRATION
Brain Master was designed to make my children laugh. I had previously built sleeping sounds skills, nature sounds, dictionary, yoga skills and scary sounds type skills available in all available countries across the globe. I wanted to put some humor into my skills. This was that project. I learnt that humor can be educational and also fun, two for one.
WHAT IT DOES
Brain Master is a multi model skill incorporating, 9 different categories for facts and funnies about the brain. Featuring fun pictures, fun and facts, Children can learn facts about their brain as well as learning about how to look after it and get the most from it.
HOW I BUILT IT
This skill took me many weeks of research to build. The layout was done in JavaScript and i spent many hours researching the different template layouts for possible utilization. I ended up choosing the Karaoke template for the basic layout idea. I then had to do some research on THE BRAIN and manipulate the code to get it to work for me.
I have previous certifications in Adult Psychology which was a little helpful but i needed more info for this skill to customize it for children. This was really a lot of fun to build. I not only enjoyed writing about the brain but i learnt a bit more about the brain for myself.
I involved my young boys whom are aged 9 and 11. They had some input in the final skill. My 11 year old son, thought of some of the Category names and ideas. So it was a fun experience for my family to make as well.
CHALLENGES I RAN IN TO
I ran into some challenges debugging the code, as you do! I also had some trouble on the echo for a while, getting it to work properly but i got there in the end.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS I'M PROUD OF
I'm really proud of the originality of this skill and i hope that is felt from my audience.
WHAT'S NEXT
I plan on keeping a close eye on comments for feedback and changes, i'd like to make it available in all Alexa enabled countries and i would also like to change up the content every now and then to keep it interesting.
WHAT I LEARNED
Overall, this really has been a fun experience, i have learnt a lot about the content, gained some more coding skills which is always a bonus and learnt to work under pressure. As this is my first Alexa Skill competition entry, i'm just happy to have finished the skill in time and have the opportunity to be a part of it. Thank you for the competition chance.
