Inspiration
Our inspiration is to make education, information, and daily living more accessible for those with visual impairments. We also wanted to make it easier for educators and volunteers to understand Braille symbols and teach it using interactive methods.
What it does
Brailly takes any text captured in an image and converts it into Braille. Think about snapping a photo of a book page, a street sign, or a menu - our app translates that text into Braille instantly and displays it using vibration enabled buttons and through audio. As the app translates text to Braille, it also displays the corresponding Braille characters on the screen, making it easier for educators and volunteers to understand and explain how standard text is transformed into Braille symbols.
How we built it
We used Flutter for a cross-platform experience, used Google's Vision API for precise image-to-text recognition, and made algorithms for accurate text-to-Braille translation.
Challenges we ran into
Using Google's API was complex, creating the text-to-Braille algorithm was tough, and finding an easy-to-use layout was tricky.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of making something for people with visual impairments. Getting the hang of Google's API, building our own text-to-Braille algorithm, and designing an app that's easy for everyone to use
What we learned
We learnt how to work with advanced APIs like Google Vision, some concepts of coding algorithms, and designing for accessibility.
What's next for Brailly
What's next is to add more teaching functionalities and make it more useful by adding features that help more people.
