BracketForge AI
Inspiration
Serving as a campus chess head and student sports committee organizer, I regularly face the administrative headache of setting up match pairings, managing rosters, and calculating standings for local events. Whether running a blitz chess arena, an esports bracket, or casual matches, existing tournament software is bloated or paywalled, while manual spreadsheets constantly collapse when dealing with odd participant counts or byes.
For this hackathon, I set out to build BracketForge AI completely from scratch: an agentic web tool that replaces tedious manual tournament management with an intuitive conversational interview that instantly forges an interactive dashboard with live brackets and auto-updating leaderboards.
What It Does
- Conversational Setup Agent: Organizers answer three structured natural-language prompts covering tournament name, format (round-robin or single-elimination), and participant rosters.
- Instant Interactive Dashboard: Immediately generates dynamic match fixture cards and a real-time leaderboard on a single page.
- Dynamic Score Logging and Standings: Arbiters log match scores directly into visual cards; points, win/draw/loss tallies, and rankings recalculate instantly with zero page reloads.
- Zero Overhead and Offline Ready: Engineered entirely client-side with persistent browser state using localStorage, ensuring zero hosting cost and reliable offline execution.
How We Built It
- AI-Assisted Specification Workflow: Designed and architected from the ground up using AI developer workflows, defining three foundational documents: scope.md (boundaries and deliverables), prd.md (user requirements and user stories), and spec.md (data schema, reactive state flow, and pairing logic).
- Frontend Core: Built with semantic HTML5, modern CSS3 featuring an esports-inspired dark theme (CSS Grid and Flexbox), and Vanilla JavaScript (ES6+).
- Deterministic Scheduling Engine: Implemented round-robin and single-elimination algorithms to handle dynamic pairings cleanly.
Challenges We Overcame
- Deterministic Match Generation: Designing an algorithm that cleanly generates balanced pairings without duplicate matchups or array index issues.
- Flicker-Free State Synchronization: Creating a lightweight reactive loop where updating any single match score triggers an immediate re-sort of the leaderboard table without UI stutter.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Building a fully functioning, zero-latency tournament engine from scratch within the hackathon period.
- Creating a clean, mobile-responsive dark interface that eliminates manual paper and spreadsheet tracking.
- Delivering a verified codebase strictly adhering to the hackathon's AI-assisted planning standards (scope.md, prd.md, spec.md).
What We Learned
- How to accelerate software prototyping using structured AI planning documentation before touching code.
- How conversational interfaces can replace multi-step setup forms for a smoother user experience.
What's Next for BracketForge AI
- Adding automated SMS and WhatsApp alerts for match calls and board assignments.
- Implementing competitive FIDE Swiss-system pairing logic.
- One-click PDF bracket sheet exports and spectator view links.
