Your health data privacy is your human right

We believe people need to own and control their health data. The only thing worse than the pandemic itself is losing our health data rights by using apps and platforms that do not respect our health data privacy. Bowhead is an international award-winning project to advance COVID-19 monitoring, diagnostics and population health while enforcing health data privacy by using encryption, blockchain and Smart Contracts.

Bowhead is a team of medical doctors, virologists, engineers, scientists, data scientists, designers and cyber security specialists that have come together to develop the Bowhead platform. The Bowhead platform is live on iOS, Android, Progressive Web apps and already has thousands of users tracking their COVID-19 symptoms. We are already working with public health entities and have people around the world that are interested in sharing their symptoms directly with public health officials.

Our goal is to create a common and open interoperable framework so apps, public health officials and researchers can monitor and analyze health data with the appropriate consent and regulatory compliance.

Our vision is to develop a platform that serves as a secure digital health platform that can provide predictive models and ingest a variety of data from different sources (biological, genomic, wearables, environmental trends, human travel trends, behavioral phenotypes, animal migration data) to combat a future outbreak.

Bowhead is in part financially supported by Canadian government grants (MITACS) and works closely with doctors from NHS Bristol and other leading hospitals in Europe to advance healthcare solutions. In addition to the Bowhead platform, we are co-developing technology (Cough4Earth) to advance triage mechanisms, for example, allowing people to use their smartphone to record vocal biomarkers to determine acoustic biomarkers of COVID-19. This is currently a hypothesis we are testing with a global consortium of collaborators. These additional signals can provide much needed input to help further classify and sort at-risk patients in a secure, fast and affordable method. Once clinically validated with peer-reviewed support, if proven, could provide an effective digital diagnostic.

This is a global problem and we need global collaboration.

What does Bowhead do

Bowhead empowers people to own and control their health data. It is easy to use and already available via iOS, Android apps as well as progressive web apps for people to track their symptoms and communicate with public health officials.

We also are working with leading mental health experts and organizations to prepare for the "after effects" of the pandemic. We expect there will be a significant number of people that will need help with post traumatic effects of the pandemic and we are working with healthcare providers, mental health experts and positive community leaders to build a community that is focused on inspiring hope. This is free of charge and a non-commercial project in order to get our communities around the world back on track.

How Bowhead built it

Bowhead was established in 2015 in Canada and works with global Top 10 Life Science organizations. Bowhead's first apps were for tracking chronic illnesses and allowing people to create secure digital health wallets to develop symptom diaries. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, our team has been making the necessary modifications in order to provide our verifiably secure blockchain at no-cost for researchers. We are beginning to scale our OPEN platform by working with universities and public health entities in Canada and Europe.

Challenges Bowhead ran into

In 2017, we found it was challenging building a private blockchain using smart contracts and using the programming language called solidity since there are not many solidity developers. Bowhead decided to patiently invest resources in its engineering talent in order to develop the most secure health data platform on the planet.

Accomplishments that Bowhead is proud of

Bowhead Health won Xconomy's Boston Biotech Week Award in 2019 and has received notable mention from XPrize Founder Peter Diamandis. We have since been able to grow our network of medical doctors and experts that propel Bowhead's vision forward. Now our team spans the globe capturing and sharing global insights with collaborators in Europe, South America, North America and Asia.

What Bowhead learned

Bowhead learned that there is no emergency in a pandemic. It is important to not rush to quick ineffective solutions and take solid measures in order to not enhance the problem. This applies to ensuring doctors wear PPE when rushing in to see patients and applies to ensuring privacy when deploying health data systems.

We have also learned that it is important to include a social element to any application. We need to provide uplifting stories and stories of hope from around the world. In conjunction with constant technical development of the Bowhead platform we are building a community of COVID-19 survivors who are interested in sharing their story publicly and inspiring hope by providing survivor's first hand experiences on their journey to recovery.

What's next for Bowhead

Our plan over the next 30 days is to deploy the solution with European and North American Partners. We recently received a grant to fund additional development and research with engineers from the University of Ottawa. This enables the project to continue without the need of significant financial contributions.

Please contact support@bowheadhealth.com if you are interested in a collaboration. We are looking for collaborators from around the world who can provide customer support, translation services, backend development, data scientists, mobile developers, epidemiologists, designers and statisticians.
