Bourbon Car Dad

Inspiration

Our inspiration came from a real problem and a real passion. My friend Mike is a genuine car enthusiast who has spent years helping friends and family navigate the car-buying process. During one of our Friday bourbon sessions (yes, the name is literal), Mike shared a story about teaching his daughter to negotiate her first car purchase. The pride in his voice wasn't just about saving money, it was about empowering her in a situation where most people feel vulnerable.

This conversation happened as Mike was expressing frustration with his corporate job and desire for more meaningful work. As someone with a background in technology who's been using AI and vibe coding for app development, I immediately saw the potential to transform Mike's expertise into something that could help more people while potentially creating his path to retirement from the corporate grind.

Car buying remains one of the most stressful, high-stakes financial decisions people make, and most consumers enter dealerships completely unprepared. Bourbon Car Dad was born from the simple idea that everyone deserves to have a knowledgeable friend in their corner when buying a car.

What it does

Bourbon Car Dad combines Mike's real-world expertise with accessible technology to help consumers navigate the car buying process with confidence. The app features:

  1. Deal Analyzer: Input a dealer quote to instantly see if you're getting a fair price, with line-by-line analysis of fees and add-ons.

  2. Negotiation Coach: Personalized scripts and talking points based on the specific vehicle, dealership, and situation.

  3. Walk-Away Reminder: A feature that sends timely notifications when pressure tactics are being used, reminding users it's okay to leave.

  4. Fee Detector: Identifies unnecessary or inflated charges and provides language to challenge them.

  5. Direct Help Option: For complex situations, users can book a consultation with Mike for personalized guidance.

The app doesn't just provide raw data, it translates information into actionable advice in a friendly, approachable manner that feels like getting tips from a knowledgeable friend rather than a cold, technical tool.

How we built it

We built Bourbon Car Dad using Bolt's no-code platform to quickly transform Mike's expertise into a functional prototype. The development process involved:

  1. Knowledge Extraction: I used conversations with Mike to build the car-buying methodology, negotiation tactics, and common pitfalls he helps people avoid.

  2. User Flow Mapping: We identified the critical moments in the car buying journey where consumers are most vulnerable and designed features to address each pain point.

  3. Personality Development: We carefully crafted the app's voice to capture Mike's straightforward, helpful approach while maintaining professionalism.

  4. Data Integration: We integrated Supabase to catalog vehicle information focusing on the most popular models to provide realistic market comparisons.

  5. Iterative Testing: We haven't tested yet, but we will be testing with friends and family who were are familiar with the car shopping grind to refine the user experience and advice quality.

The Bolt platform allowed us to rapidly prototype and iterate without extensive coding knowledge, enabling us to focus on the content and user experience rather than technical implementation.

Challenges we ran into

Building Bourbon Car Dad presented several challenges:

  1. Knowledge Complexity: Distilling an often emotional process into an app-based function was interesting. Car buying involves numerous variables and emotional factors that don't always follow logical patterns.

  2. Platform Limitations: While Bolt provided a great starting point, we encountered limitations when trying to implement our complete vehicle database. The platform initially only supported two car brands ("Bmw" and "Hyundai"), requiring creative workarounds and multiple revision cycles. Ultimately, we integrated with Supabase and GitHub, and created paid tiers with Stripe integration.

  3. Data Accessibility: Comprehensive vehicle pricing data is expensive to access through commercial APIs. We had to develop alternative approaches to provide valuable insights without prohibitive costs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges, we've achieved several meaningful milestones:

  1. Authentic Voice: We successfully captured a Dad's approachable expertise in the app's interface and advice, creating something that feels genuinely helpful rather than clinical or judgmental.

  2. Emotional Support: Beyond financial savings, some of our potential test users felt the app would help them feel significantly more confident and less anxious about the car buying process—addressing the emotional aspect of this major purchase.

  3. Business Potential: We've validated that there's genuine demand for this service, with potential testers asking when they can share it with friends and expressing willingness to pay for premium features.

What we learned

This project has been a tremendous learning experience:

  1. Domain Expertise Matters: The most valuable aspect of our app isn't fancy technology, it's Mike's real-world knowledge and experience. Technology is just the delivery mechanism.

  2. Emotional Needs Are as Important as Information: Users don't just want data; they want reassurance and confidence. The most appreciated features were those that provided emotional support during stressful moments.

  3. Platform Selection Is Critical: While no-code platforms like Bolt enable rapid prototyping, understanding their limitations upfront would have helped us design more efficiently.

  4. Iteration Requires Real Users: We expect our most valuable insights to come from watching real people use the app in actual car-buying situations, not from theoretical planning.

  5. Business Models Need to Align with Values: We realized that common monetization strategies in the automotive space (dealer referrals) would undermine our core value proposition of being on the consumer's side.

What's next for Bourbon Car Dad

Our vision for Bourbon Car Dad extends beyond this initial prototype:

  1. Expanded Vehicle Coverage: Developing a comprehensive database covering all major makes and models in the North American market.

  2. Advanced Negotiation AI: Enhancing our negotiation coach with more sophisticated scenario planning and dealer-specific tactics.

  3. Business Model Implementation: Developing a sustainable revenue model that maintains our consumer advocacy position, likely through a combination of premium features and consultation services.

Most importantly, we're working to turn this from a prototype into a viable business that can help Mike transition from his corporate job to doing something he's genuinely passionate about, helping people navigate one of their largest purchases with confidence and knowledge.

Because everyone deserves to have a car guy in their corner when making one of life's biggest purchases.
