Inspiration

BounceBack Pickle started with a simple observation: pickleballs break constantly, and almost every one of them ends up in the trash.

As pickleball exploded across the country, I started looking into what was happening to all of those cracked balls. I found that more than 120 million pickleballs are manufactured each year, creating millions of pounds of plastic waste with virtually no scalable recycling solution.

So I started small. I placed a recycling bin at a local pickleball facility in Florida just to see if players would actually use it. Within the first few days, it started filling up.

Then other facilities started asking for bins. Then facilities in other cities. Then other states.

That was when I realized this was not just a recycling project. There was an opportunity to build an entirely new circular system for one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

What it does

BounceBack Pickle is building a closed-loop recycling system for pickleball.

We partner with pickleball facilities, clubs, and tournaments to collect cracked and end-of-life pickleballs before they reach landfills. Those balls are then cleaned, ground, pulverized, and remanufactured into new recycled pickleballs that can go directly back onto the court.

Our business has two core products and services.

First, facilities can join our recycling program, which gives them a simple collection system and sustainability platform to recycle their broken pickleballs.

Second, we manufacture and sell our recycled pickleballs back into the market through facilities, pro shops, tournaments, custom-branded partnerships, and direct-to-consumer sales.

The goal is simple: give every cracked pickleball a second life.

How we built it

We built BounceBack from the ground up by testing each part of the system in the real world.

We started by placing recycling bins at local facilities and learning how quickly balls accumulated, how facilities wanted the program to operate, and what players responded to.

From there, we expanded the collection network while simultaneously developing the manufacturing process required to turn old pickleballs back into new ones.

That process required us to experiment with washing, grinding, pulverizing, rotational molding, drilling, finishing, and printing recycled material into a playable product.

We worked with manufacturers, plastics experts, facility operators, pickleball professionals, and players to refine the product.

We then distributed prototypes to players and head professionals across the country, collected feedback, improved the material consistency, and continued refining the manufacturing process.

Today, BounceBack has grown from one recycling bin into a network of nearly 100 partner facilities across 13 states.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge has been solving a problem that did not already have an existing playbook.

Collecting pickleballs was relatively straightforward. Turning those broken balls back into a high-performance product was much harder.

Pickleballs require extremely consistent material properties, wall thickness, weight, bounce, and durability. Recycled plastic introduces additional variables, so we had to work through issues involving contamination, material consistency, porosity, grinding size, molding conditions, drilling, and quality control.

We also had to figure out how to make the recycling system scalable. A model that works for one facility does not automatically work for hundreds or thousands.

We have had manufacturing delays, imperfect prototypes, logistical challenges, and plenty of moments where we had to rethink parts of the process.

But each challenge has forced us to build a better system.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

What started with one recycling bin has grown into nearly 100 partner facilities across 13 states.

We have collected thousands of pounds of broken pickleballs that otherwise would have gone to landfills.

Our recycled pickleball prototypes have been tested by head professionals and players across the country, and we have continued improving the product through real-world feedback.

Our first production run generated strong pre-order demand, and we have secured more than $50,000 in letters of intent for custom-branded recycled pickleballs from organizations including Ritz-Carlton and Royal Caribbean.

BounceBack has also earned more than $75,000 in non-dilutive funding through pitch competitions and innovation challenges.

Most recently, BounceBack was selected as one of the Top 8 finalists in the 2026 Hult Prize after more than 18,000 teams applied globally, giving us the opportunity to pitch the company on an international stage.

What we learned

The biggest thing we have learned is that sustainability works best when it also creates value for the people participating in it.

Facilities do not just want somewhere to send broken pickleballs. They want a program their players can engage with, a sustainability story they can share, and a product that can come back into their facility.

We have also learned that solving a physical waste problem requires much more than a good idea. It requires understanding manufacturing, logistics, material science, customer behavior, pricing, operations, and distribution all at the same time.

Most importantly, we learned to build alongside our customers.

Nearly every major improvement we have made has come from putting something into the real world, listening to players and facilities, and improving from there.

What’s next for BounceBack Pickle

The next stage is scale.

We are expanding our facility network nationally while increasing manufacturing capacity and bringing our recycled pickleball into broader commercial production.

Our goal is to grow from nearly 100 facilities today to thousands of facilities across the country, creating a collection network capable of diverting hundreds of thousands of pounds of plastic from landfills.

At the same time, we are expanding distribution through facilities, pro shops, tournaments, strategic partners, and custom-branded programs.

Long term, we believe BounceBack can become the circular infrastructure behind pickleball, creating a system where broken balls are no longer waste.

They become the raw material for the next ball.
