Inspiration

The inspiration for this game came from real-world bouldering gyms and the growing interest in fitness-based VR experiences. We wanted to recreate the excitement, challenge, and satisfaction of climbing while making it accessible to people who may not have access to a climbing gym. By combining physical movement, game mechanics, and friendly competition, our goal was to design a game that feels both like a workout and an engaging sport. We were also inspired by the idea of short, repeatable play sessions that fit easily into daily routines.

What It Does

Link to pitch: link

This project is an immersive VR bouldering game that allows players to climb virtual walls using natural hand movements. Players race against the clock, improve their personal records, and compete with others in multiplayer mode. The game offers different climbing routes, playful modes, and clear scoring systems that motivate players to improve their performance. It delivers a fun and active experience without requiring real climbing equipment, bringing the bouldering gym experience directly into the player’s home.

How We Built It

We built the game using VR technology focused on natural interaction. Hand tracking and controller input were used to simulate realistic climbing movements. Modular wall systems allow us to generate and configure climbing routes with different difficulties. Time-based challenges, automatic score tracking, and quick restarts were implemented to support fast learning and skill improvement. We also paid close attention to the art style, using bright lighting and clear, colorful holds to ensure strong visibility during intense physical movement.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges was making climbing feel natural and intuitive in VR. Even small inaccuracies in movement detection could break immersion. Another challenge was balancing realism with comfort, as fast or unnatural movements can cause discomfort or motion sickness. Multiplayer synchronization also required careful handling to ensure fairness and stability. Finally, we had to balance accessibility for beginners while still providing enough challenge for experienced players.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We are proud of creating a VR climbing system that feels intuitive and physically engaging. Successfully blending fitness and gameplay into one cohesive experience was a major achievement. The implementation of competitive multiplayer adds replay value and motivation, while short play sessions make the game approachable for a wide audience. We also achieved a clean and readable visual design that supports player focus and safety during movement.

What We Learned

Throughout development, we learned that simplicity is key in VR game design. Clear visuals and straightforward mechanics greatly improve player comfort and enjoyment. We also learned that progression systems and competition significantly increase player engagement. Testing early and often was critical for refining movement mechanics and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience. Most importantly, VR fitness games require constant attention to player comfort and physical limitations.

What's Next

Next, we plan to expand the game with procedurally generated climbing routes to provide endless variety. We aim to introduce progression systems such as stamina, skills, and gear customization to deepen long-term engagement. Improving multiplayer stability and performance optimization will be a priority, along with additional safety-focused features to ensure smooth and secure gameplay experiences in future updates.
