Motivation

Over 50 percent of American men and 60 percent of American women never engage in any vigorous physical activity lasting more than 10 minutes per week. Exercise deficiency threatens both physical and mental wellness, shortening your lifespan. In fact, experiments show that sitting down for too long can be fatal for your health. Those who sit for long periods of time are twice as likely to have diabetes or heart disease. ~So, stand up!~ The mere act of standing up from a seated position is effective at counteracting the detrimental health effects of sitting too long. Standing up four times an hour can significantly increase your health, but most people will forget to do this once working.

Solution

Our inspired solution is BottomsUp, a smart pillow for health innovation. This pillow pal will keep you on your toes, reminding you to stand up regularly and avoid a completely sedentary life style. Understanding our own struggles of sitting down in front of a computer for hours straight, getting no form of healthy exercise, we decided that this product would be useful for not only students but those in the office environment.

Features

Our product is designed on an Intel Edison and uses a pressure sensor to evaluate the users' sitting status. Using the Twillio library in JavaScript, BottomsUp beeps, vibrates, and texts your phone after you have sat down for too long of an interval. Friendly messages include texts like "Time to walk around!" and other exercise suggestions like "Let's do some jumping jacks." Users input their phone number for notifications and their time interval preferences on our app.
