Inspiration
I wanted a simple daily puzzle that could have people playing everyday. I knew about the bottle color match challenge that went on in social media and decided to bring it to live thoughout the devvit platform
What it does
Every day a new post ships with a hidden order for 7 color coded bottles. Tap two to swap them and the game tells you how many are already in the right spot. Solve that and a 10 bottle hard mode unlocks on the same post. Once you solve a puzzle, the crate pops open to show your finished arrangement, and you can check a move count chart to see how you compare to everyone else who solved it that day.
How we built it
Client is vanilla TypeScript and CSS, no framework or game engine, running in Devvit's inline webview. The backend is a Hono server on Devvit with Redis storing puzzles and per-player progress. The board is real SVG art, not generated shapes. Swaps are optimistic on the client so bottles move instantly while the server stays the source of truth for what's actually saved. Later we moved match-checking to the client too: the solution ships encrypted so the wait on every swap disappears, and swap requests are signed so a stray console call can't just forge a move.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A puzzle generator that never starts you suspiciously close to the answer. And the move-distribution chart, which turns "you solved it" into "you solved it, here's how you compare."
What's next for Bottle Color Match
Possibly more difficulty tiers for players who breeze through hard mode. And I also have some ideas about community collaborative levels, where a whole community would have to come up with a solution with limited moves per user and really big number of bottles
