Inspiration

Access to healthcare in Botswana, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, is often limited by distance, long queues, and inconsistent follow-up care. Many patients leave clinics without ongoing support, leading to avoidable complications. We wanted to create something that continues care beyond the clinic visit, empowers patients with reliable guidance, and reduces unnecessary hospital strain. Tlamelo e-Clinic was inspired by the idea that healthcare should reach the patient, not only the patient reach healthcare.

What it does

Tlamelo e-Clinic is a mobile-first digital healthcare assistant that helps patients: Assess symptoms through an AI-guided symptom checker, Access local emergency contacts instantly, Locate nearby healthcare facilities, Get first aid instructions for critical situations, Request medicine delivery, Book consultations with healthcare professionals, It creates a continuous care experience, reducing confusion, improving early intervention, and bringing medical guidance closer to the user.

How we built it

We developed Tlamelo e-Clinic as a React-based web application with a clean, professional healthcare interface. Key components include: React.js & JavaScript for UI and user flows, Custom responsive CSS optimized for mobile, A modular architecture with separate components for each service,

Built-in structures ready for: Firebase Authentication & Database, Google Maps Platform for facility mapping, Vertex/Gemini AI for enhanced medical triage, Cloud Functions for backend automation, We also designed medical assessment logic tailored to Botswana’s care context.

Challenges we ran into

Designing medical symptom flows that are accurate without overwhelming the user Ensuring mobile accessibility for areas with varying network speeds, Creating UI that is simple enough for non-technical users, Preparing architecture that can later integrate real AI models and healthcare API, Balancing local relevance with a scalable system structure, These challenges pushed us to prioritize clarity, reliability, and human-centered design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A fully functional prototype featuring 6 core healthcare support services. Four complete medical triage pathways with risk flags and escalation guidance. A polished, clinic-ready user interface with smooth navigation and responsive design. A system built with scalability and future integration already planned into the architecture. A solution that is practical, affordable, and directly relevant to real healthcare challenges in Botswana and Africa.

What we learned

Healthcare design requires simplicity and empathy — every screen matters. Real-world problems need context-aware solutions, not imported models. Building scalable systems means planning for future data, growth, and integrations early. Collaboration between tech and healthcare understanding is essential for meaningful impact.

What's next for Tlamelo e-Clinic

Immediate (Post-Hackathon) Deploy on Firebase Hosting, Add user accounts and medical chat history, Integrate Google Maps for facility locations, Connect Gemini AI for real symptom reasoning, Enable database persistence,

Mid-term Payment integration for teleconsultations, Partnerships with local pharmacies for delivery, Emergency location-sharing with ambulance services, English + other language interface.

Long-term Vision Scale across Africa with: Region-specific care models, AI trained on African clinical data, Public health analytics to support policy and planning.

Tlamelo e-Clinic aims to become Africa’s patient-first digital healthcare companion.
