Inspiration

We all were speaking about our favorite places in Boston and realized that it would be cool to combine all of our favorite places onto one platform. We decided that we all wanted to learn more about html/css/php and decided that out final project would be a webpage.

What it does

We designed a a welcome to Boston webpage which has 4 different categories, eat, shop, explore and fun. The user can navigate through the site and discover local activities, restaurants, and places to visit. Each categories has a range of activities for users to select from and information about each. Our goal for this site was too highlight sustainable activities in Boston, so for each of the categories the only businesses we have displayed now have an emphasis on either recycling, sourcing their supply locally, or support the community.

How we built it

As we are beginner programmers in HTML,PHP, and CSS we focused on learning the languages through the modification of preexisting webpage templates. We changed essentially every element on the template using it as a base to create our design.

Challenges we ran into

As the majority of us had never worked in these language before we found in challenging to learn the syntax when designing the webpages. Additionally, when we combined each of our parts we had to debug a-lot of issues that came up.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to start from nothing and create a functioning final project that we can share and build on in the future. In particular, we are proud of the layout and the way we worked sustainability into our site as a whole.

What we learned

In addition to finding great companionship, we learned how to use html and php to build a webpage. By referring a template and modifying it to fit our dream webpage it helped us learn the syntax. Additionally, through debugging our code we learned how to work as a team to solve problems and locate errors.

What's next for Boston 101

We would like to add more user interactivity to the webpage, such as a path to sustainable Boston activities. To do this we want to create a feature that allows users to to create a wishlist of places they want to visit, and save those places to a running list. Going off of this users would be able to personalize the site by signing in so the data can be saved for each user. Ideally, users could use the site like a bucket list, where they want to go, and where they have been. Additionally, we thought of adding a map so that users could pin where they have been, taking into account the coordinates and automatically placing the pin on the map. Another one of our ideas is to have users click through options in-the format below to get suggestions on what to. What do you want to do? Eat, Shop, Explore and an Activity What season would you like to travel? What area would you like to travel to? Some additional features we would also like to add include the ability to reserve activities through the site, ensure that everything is cohesive, and bring sustainability more into focus through the site. One idea we had to increase the sustainable focus is to have a sustainability meter which fills up as users attend events, go to restaurant and visit locations that have a sustainable focus.
