Borna11y is a writing software that helps you create accessible documents from the ground-up. The name is inspired by the born accessible movement – where “a11y” is shorthand for accessible. Our goal is to ensure that any person at any need level can access a document on their terms. This means it is readable by screen readers, customizable for different sight-levels, and intuitive to use.
Our design was inspired by Kat Holmes and her book “Mismatched” where she framed disability as a “mismatch of interactions” rather than a “personal health problem”. We as designers wanted to create a workspace that allowed writers, researchers, and readers to create documents that are living and can be changed to meet each individual’s needs.
Understanding the intricacies of why documents were inherently inaccessible was difficult, but we are proud of our team’s dedication to learning and passion for inclusive design. Everyone should be able to access vital documents – in any form – and we hope in the future we can polish/finish Borna11y and spread the importance of inclusive design.
