Inspiration
We wanted to make math practice more exciting and less boring. Many students struggle to stay engaged while learning basic arithmetic, so we gamified it with a fun and fast-paced border guard theme.
What it does
Border Math Guard challenges players to decide whether NPCs are humans or zombies based on simple math statements. Correct answers increase score, wrong ones reduce health, and three mistakes mean Game Over.
How we built it
We built the game using React for the frontend and Tailwind CSS for styling, ensuring a responsive and clean UI. Game logic is handled with React hooks, and NPC assets are randomized each round to keep gameplay fresh.
Challenges we ran into
We had to balance quick game logic updates, NPC image randomization without repeats, and smooth transitions within a tight 48-hour hackathon timeframe. Making it fun yet educational was another challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of delivering a fully playable educational game within the hackathon deadline. It’s simple, responsive, and actually makes math practice fun.
What we learned
We learned how to rapidly prototype a game concept, improve UX with subtle details like health tracking and randomized NPCs, and how gamification can significantly increase student engagement.
