Inspiration

The idea for Khala Ka Larka was sparked by a classic South Asian heartbreak — when love collides with family tradition. We wanted to reimagine that emotional chaos as something visually electric, funny, and bittersweet. Inspired by anime aesthetics and BoP’s soulful yet energetic sound, we set out to tell a story that blends heartbreak, humor, and rhythm in a way that feels universally relatable.

What it does

Bop – Khala Ka Larka is an AI-animated music video set to the song by BoP, a Seattle-based band known for their genre-blending sound and South Asian roots. The video follows a college boy who loses his girlfriend when her parents arrange her marriage to her aunt’s son — “Khala ka larka.”

Through anime-style visuals, punchy edits, and expressive color storytelling, the video captures the irony of losing love not to another man, but to family tradition.

How we built it

We used a GenAI-powered production pipeline to merge art, technology, and music:

  • Visuals: Generated anime-style keyframes using Midjourney for consistent character art and scene composition.
  • Animation: Applied RunwayML and Midjourney to animate sequences and add dynamic camera movement.
  • Music: Used the original BoP track as the creative foundation, syncing visuals precisely to beat and emotion.
  • Editing: Crafted and finalized the music video in Adobe Premiere Pro with rhythmic precision and layered motion design.

Challenges we ran into

  • Preserving anime-style consistency across multiple AI-generated frames.
  • Keeping the cultural tone authentic while appealing to a global audience.
  • Balancing visual flair with technical render constraints across platforms.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created one of the first Urdu-English anime-inspired AI music videos featuring a Western band with South Asian influence.
  • Used the persona of the main singer to be used as the anime character in the video.
  • Developed a complete GenAI-to-editing workflow, from concept to final render.
  • Captured a story of love, loss, and irony that bridges cultural and creative boundaries.

What we learned

  • That emotion drives AI art, technology amplifies authenticity when guided by real human stories.
  • How to align musical structure with AI animation pacing for seamless storytelling.
  • The power of cross-cultural collaboration, blending Seattle’s indie music energy with Desi anime-inspired visuals.

What's next for Bop - Khala ka Larka

  • Release other perspectives in the story with new songs but same characters.
  • Add English, Japanese, and Urdu subtitles for international reach.
  • Collaborate with BoP on a follow-up video trilogy expanding on Desi love, loss, and irony through anime storytelling.
