Inspiration

Many college students in STEM fields often find themselves spending a lot of time on Discord. Whether they are organizing club events, chatting in social groups, or connecting with peers in a certain class, Discord is a versatile setting. We were specifically inspired to create Boost Bot from our experiences waiting in long office hours queues on Discord. Women in STEM often feel uneasy asking questions in class, as the stigma around the gender perpetuates their fear. Boost Bot provides a positive outlet for students when feeling anxious on Discord. Instead of picking up their cell phone to mindlessly scroll through social media, we have created Boost Bot, providing an alternative to unhealthy media obsessions.

What it does

Boost Bot has multiple features that a user can request. It can provide an inspiring quote, send a funny dog picture, suggest various television shows to watch, present a stress-relieving idea, or let the user answer fun trivia questions.

How we built it

We used Python and collaborated on the code using repl. It was our first time building a Discord bot using the discord.py api so we watched some tutorials to help us understand, then built a bot specific to our needs.

Challenges we ran into

Most of our challenges came from learning and understanding the documentation for the discord api since we are all beginners and this was our first hackathon. We were able to work together as a team to find resources to help us resolve errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to create a bot that empowers women and uplifts moods compared to the negative impacts other social media platforms provide. We are proud that all of us can use this bot in our personal, everyday lives.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of Python and learned a lot about how Discord bots work. Additionally, we gained experience working with a team of new people. We were all new to hackathons so we learned what hackathons are like.

What's next for Boost Bot

Boost Bot has a lot of potential to add more features. Something we were considering that would be a fun feature to add would be having Boost Bot send music recommendations.
