Inspiration

A lot of our group struggles with focusing when reading articles online for school. There is also a lack of tools to make the web accessible! Only 4% of the web is considered accessible which needs to increase. Our goal is to make articles easier and more efficient to read for everyone :)

What it does

Our application takes in any article from the web and allows you to edit it's font, size, width of spacing between lines, adapts to increase color blindness accessibility, adapts to increase dyslexia accessibility, reads it out loud, and highlights what it believes to be important parts of the article. There's even a "evil" mode which has a lot of funny features such as adding wingdings font, makes font sizes unique, and many more fun features :0

How we built it

Languages: Python, JavaScript
Frameworks: Flask, Tailwind CSS
Libraries: Fontawesome, Rich
Tools: Docker, Conda, Waitress
APIs: Google Gemini API

Challenges we ran into

We ran into a lot of challenges with formatting and JavaScript console errors. Our group had many merge conflicts that were complicated and time consuming to fix. Thankfully we were able to fix them by working together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're so proud of getting so much of this done! It really looks professional and is very functional. The custom pixel art is super impressive in this project, and we were able to add one of our stretch goals which was "evil" mode!

What we learned

We learned a lot about tailwind! Most of our group members were not familiar with this framework so there was definitely a learning curve. We also utilized GitHub live sharing feature which helped us prevent some merge conflicts when group members were working on files at the same time.

What's next for BookWorm

We would love to increase accessibility in the future by adding more features for various disabilities, and also testing to ensure these features are helpful. Due to time constraints during the hackathon, we were unable to add every accessibility feature. We would love to test our accessibility features to those who need them, to ensure they are as useful and inclusive as possible <3
