Inspiration

The idea for Book Swap came from my own experience as a medical aspirant. During my preparation, I spent around 40,000–50,000 PKR on books and study materials. After completing my entrance test, I no longer needed most of those books. They were simply sitting at home, even though they could still be extremely valuable to another student.

I conducted a survey at my university and discovered that many other students faced the same problem. They had books sitting unused at home after completing their courses or exams, while other students were struggling to afford expensive new books.

This made me think: What if there was a dedicated marketplace where people could give their books a second life?

That idea became Book Swap—a platform where users can buy, sell, and swap preloved books at affordable prices. Someone who is finished with a book can recover part of their investment, while another student or reader can access that same book at a much lower price.

I chose preloved books because not everyone can afford brand-new books, especially students and families who already have significant educational expenses. Instead of allowing useful books to remain unused, Book Swap connects people who have finished with their books to people who need them.

What it does

Book Swap allows users to:

Buy preloved books Sell books they no longer need Swap books with other users Search for specific books Request books that are not currently available Chat with sellers before making a purchase

The platform also addresses a major problem I experienced personally. When I was looking for used books, I often searched through Facebook Marketplace and other platforms. However, these platforms were not specifically designed for books, and listings could disappear quickly without providing a structured marketplace experience.

Book Swap provides a dedicated environment where everything related to buying, selling, and exchanging books is organized in one place.

One of our key features is in-app chat. Buyers can ask sellers about the condition of a book, its edition, markings, or other details before spending their money.

Another important feature is escrow-based payment. The buyer's payment is held by Book Swap while the seller delivers the book. Once the buyer confirms that they have received it, the payment is released to the seller after applicable platform and payment charges. This adds an additional layer of trust to transactions between people who may not know each other.

How we built it

The mobile application was built using Flutter, with Firebase powering the backend.

We also integrated APIs and services to improve the platform's functionality, including:

Google Books API for book and ISBN-related information Google Maps API for location-related functionality Easypaisa for payment processing

Building the project was not only about creating individual features. One of our biggest priorities was connecting those features into a smooth end-to-end flow. A user should always understand what they need to do next, whether they are listing a book, purchasing one, making a payment, receiving an order, or confirming delivery.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest technical challenges was designing the complete workflow of the application. Connecting authentication, book listings, search, chat, payment, delivery, verification, and transaction completion into one reliable pipeline required significant planning and iteration.

Security was another challenge. During development, we noticed unauthorized or unexpected accounts accessing the system. We investigated activity logs, strengthened our authentication and security measures, and monitored the system more carefully.

We also faced the challenge of building awareness around a new marketplace. Even if the technology works, a marketplace needs users on both sides—people selling books and people looking for them.

Finally, we had a limited development timeline. We built the product in approximately three months, so we had to continuously prioritize features, test them, collect feedback, and improve the product through trial and error.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our journey with Book Swap has also given us opportunities to take the project beyond development and into the wider technology community.

In 2026, Book Swap made it to the PASHA Awards, giving us an opportunity to showcase our idea and compete alongside other technology projects.

We also had the opportunity to represent Book Swap at ITCN Asia 2026, where we presented the project and shared our vision with a broader technology and innovation community.

These experiences validated the potential of the idea and motivated us to continue developing Book Swap beyond its initial prototype.

What we learned

Our current prototype is fully functional and deployed. With more development time, we would like to introduce a recommendation system that analyzes users' interests and the types of books they search for or interact with. This could help us personalize the experience and recommend relevant books to each user.

We also plan to expand Book Swap beyond the current mobile application by bringing it to iOS and the web.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: give every book a second life while making knowledge more affordable and accessible to students, parents, and readers.

What's next for BookSwap

The future of Book Swap is not just about helping people find a book—it is about helping them discover the books they love.

As the platform grows, we want to understand what readers are interested in by analyzing their searches, preferences, interactions, and the types of books they explore. We plan to develop recommendation algorithms that can use these insights to surface relevant books and make personalized discovery easier.

The vision is to build a marketplace that continuously learns what its readers love and brings those books closer to them—making it easier for someone to find their next favorite book.

We also plan to expand Book Swap beyond the current mobile application by bringing it to iOS and the web.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: give every book a second life, make reading more affordable, and help every reader find a book they'll love.
