📚 Bookly Audio

Inspiration

Audiobooks are booming right now, but actually making one is still a pretty heavy lift. If you want something that sounds professional, you usually need narrators, editors, sound engineers, the whole production team. That means a lot of time, money, and coordination. Because of that, many independent authors and smaller publishers never get around to creating audiobook versions of their work.

At the same time, text-to-speech technology has gotten incredibly good. But we quickly realized that sounding natural isn’t the whole story. A great audiobook isn’t just about reading words out loud, it’s about understanding the story. Who’s speaking? What’s the tone? How do you keep each character's voice consistent across chapters?

That's where the idea for Bookly Audio came from.

We didn't want to build just another text-to-speech tool. We wanted to create something that actually understands a story before turning it into audio.

What it does

Bookly Audio takes a manuscript and turns it into a complete audiobook using an AI-driven workflow.

Instead of just reading text line by line, it looks at the bigger picture. It analyzes the structure of the story, figures out who's speaking, keeps character voices consistent, and generates expressive narration using modern AI speech models.

Here's how the process works:

  • Upload your manuscript
  • Let the system analyze the story
  • Identify narration vs. dialogue
  • Assign voices to characters
  • Generate expressive audio
  • Review, tweak, and export your audiobook

The goal is simple: take something that normally takes weeks and make it possible in minutes, without taking away creative control.

How we built it

Bookly Audio is built as a pipeline that combines several AI components working together.

At a high level, it includes:

  • A manuscript processing system that turns raw text into structured data
  • Large Language Models to understand the story and assign dialogue
  • A character-aware voice system to keep voices consistent
  • AI speech synthesis for natural, expressive narration
  • A review interface so users can edit and regenerate sections
  • A web app that ties everything together into a smooth workflow

Instead of relying on one big model to do everything, we broke the problem down into smaller pieces. Each part of the system handles a specific task, and together they form a complete audiobook production pipeline.

This modular approach also makes it easier to improve individual parts over time without rebuilding everything from scratch.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was realizing that audiobook creation is very different from basic text-to-speech.

TTS systems are great at reading sentences, but books are more complex. There's dialogue, narration, emotional shifts, and characters that appear again and again. Keeping everything consistent across an entire book is not trivial.

We had to rethink the pipeline so it could understand context, not just individual lines.

Another challenge was finding the right dataset for training the model and acquiring it was very difficult

Finally, getting multiple AI components to work together smoothly required careful design and a lot of iteration.

What we learned

One big takeaway from this project is that building creative AI tools isn't just about using powerful models.

The real challenge is orchestration, breaking a complex process into smaller steps and making sure they all work together reliably.

We also learned a lot about system design, prompt engineering, workflow automation, and building scalable web applications. On top of that, we explored how to keep humans in the loop so users can still guide the final output.

Most importantly, we learned that storytelling is deeply contextual. Understanding a narrative is a much harder and more interesting problem than just generating realistic speech.

What's next for Bookly Audio

We see Bookly Audio as more than just an audiobook generator.

Some of the things we're excited to explore next include:

  • Keeping character voices consistent across entire book series
  • Adding emotion-aware narration and performance direction(already in production)
  • Supporting multiple languages
  • Generating sound effects and ambient audio automatically
  • Helping guide dialogue delivery with AI
  • Enabling collaboration for publishers and production teams
  • Creating interactive and personalized storytelling experiences

Ultimately, we want audiobook creation to be as easy as publishing an ebook.

Bookly Audio is our first step toward making that future possible.
