Inspiration

Coronavirus has us quarantined at home, thus leaving us struggling to find ideas of things to do. With restaurants, movie theaters and leisure centres closed and government orders to stay indoors, people are having trouble thinking of activities to occupy their time.

According to a study by the NYT, entertainment and social media app usage has increased by up to 30%. Teenagers and young adults have especially increased social media screen time, now using apps like Instagram up to 7 hours a day.

Nowadays, with so much entertainment available at the touch of a screen, reading for leisure is almost unheard of. According to a study by the Washington Post, in the last 15 years, the average person reading on a given day has fallen by over 30%. In the UK, over 50% of adults and teenagers said they hadn't read a book in the last year for leisure.

What it does

We created an app that incentivizes people to read. Whenever you complete a book, you can add it to a list of books you have read and take a test on that book to earn credits, known as BookBucks. You can also view a leaderboard with your friends as well as stats and trends for your own reading. There is a limit of two books a week so that you can't keep uploading books you have previously read and completing tests to get more bookbucks.

How we built it

We built it using xcode and swift to create an IOS app. We linked it to the Google Book Api and plan to link it to FireBase.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge we ran into was definitely to finish the project on time. We found about the hackathon only 2 days before the deadline and are proud that we managed to still produce a high quality end product in the time available. Another challenge, was the lack of experience we have in competing with those much older than us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being just students, we are very proud to be competing with those with much more experience than us and still producing a high quality end product.

What's next for BookBucks : Promoting Reading For All

We plan to not only increase our choice of game formats and questions formats, but also partner with other companies who would like to advertise their book related products. We also plan to introduce a better UI and UX, thus improving our product. Whats next? An Improvement in the reading habits of all!
