📘 BookBlast-AI — One Man’s Mission to Redefine Education

💡 Inspiration

As a solo educator from South Africa, I’ve seen firsthand how outdated publishing systems and a lack of local resources delay or deny students access to quality education. I refused to accept that high-quality learning content should remain a luxury for the privileged few.

⚙️ What It Does

BookBlast-AI instantly creates curriculum-aligned MiniBooks and matching slide decks from scratch — in any subject, any language, and aligned to any major curriculum (CAPS, IGCSE, IB, CBSE, etc.).

  • Each MiniBook can be generated in under 2 minutes, up to 60 pages
  • Current public version is capped at 15-page PDF output (by design, due to limited API credits)
  • Output can be easily extended by modifying internal parameters
  • Supports multilingual generation and modular export for classroom or online delivery

⚠️ A flipbook viewer is not currently built-in, but the underlying system can export flipbook-compatible formats for external use or future integration.

Cost per generated MiniBook: under $0.05

🔧 How We Built It

  • bolt.new for frontend flow logic and UI
  • GPT-4-mini API for real-time AI-powered content generation
  • Gamma.app API (alpha access) for PDF layout and export
  • Supabase Edge Functions to securely handle API requests
  • Structured with JSON, exported as PDF, with future-ready support for Markdown, LaTeX, and SCORM formats

🧱 Challenges We Ran Into

  • Limited to a very small API token budget, requiring strict efficiency and output capping
  • Development occurred under unreliable infrastructure (power outages, weak internet)
  • Feature scope had to be carefully trimmed — simulation and gamification features remain on the roadmap
  • Flipbook embedding and LMS integration not yet implemented due to time constraints

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Functional app creates 15–60 page curriculum-aligned MiniBooks from scratch in minutes
  • Achieved multilingual and curriculum-agnostic generation from a single input
  • Delivered a production-ready output format under extreme budget and time pressure
  • Proved that solo devs with the right access and intent can compete with large-scale edtech

  • Constraints helped sharpen focus and reveal which features truly matter
  • Maintaining modular, upgradable output pipelines is essential when working with evolving APIs
  • Quality educational content doesn’t have to be slow or expensive — just intelligently built
