Inspiration

The inspiration for BookBag comes from the current literacy crisis: In 2024, 40% of U.S. fourth-grade students performed below the NAEP Basic level in reading. Nearly half of our children are entering middle school without the foundational literacy required to handle increasingly complex subjects. I was also inspired by the impact of consistency: Students who average at least 30 minutes of daily reading are projected to encounter 13.7 million words between kindergarten and twelfth-grade graduation, compared with 1.5 million for students who average less than 15 minutes per day.

I was also inspired by a program called Book It! offered by Pizza Hut, which rewards children with piping hot pizza in exchange for completing books!

What it does

BookBag is a reading companion app that is geared towards students 13 and older. It helps students track momentum, reflect and leave reviews and ratings on books that they finish, celebrate each time they finish a book and record it in the app, and discover what to read next.

BookBag combines reading momentum, authentic reviews, organic discovery, and Celebration Tickets into a safe environment that is tailored to help students develop better reading habits. Teachers, librarians, parents, and caretakers can create or use their own rewards systems to interface with the student's shareable ticket collection without BookBag needing to create special classroom environments, special credentials, or other complex setup.

How we built it

BookBag was created for OpenAI Build Week in a single primary Codex thread powered by GPT-5.6 Sol Medium at both Standard and Fast speeds. BookBag was not a pre-existing application or MVP.

I created a plan that outlined the mission, the scope, the core features, tradeoffs for the short sprint, and provided that in the Codex thread before we began. Codex and GPT-5.6 took my initial plan and created a full production plan and task list with testable milestones. It then went to work creating everything from the TypeScript, React, Supabase, Vite, and the PWA. Codex acted as the development partner through the whole project.

The app also evolved through conversation. While I defined the vision and was responsible for executive decisions, Codex helped me translate them into a polished experience. Every feature was tested locally and in production, and hands-on testing led us to strengthen content filtering before launch. Real teacher feedback helped to shape the Community Feed, the Celebration Ticket system, and other aspects of BookBag prior to launch.

The result is not just a prototype, but a designed, deployed, tested and iterated upon product.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered an unexpected Internet Archive outage that temporarily disrupted book-cover delivery, even though nothing had changed in production. We worked past it and moved on to other things but it caused quite the scare! Our solution for covers not populating is a fallback design for each cover and it worked great during the outage!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of being able to go from idea to product in such a short time, and I'm proud that I was able to build something that can truly help students develop better reading habits. I'm proud that I was able to ship a PWA with authentication, privacy controls, moderation, offline support, automated tests, and teacher feedback within one week.

What I learned

I learned how to easily deploy an app on Vercel, and learned about the many safety measures that need to be taken into consideration when creating an app geared towards a younger audience. I also learned a lot about what it takes to test and ship a PWA, something I had not done before.

What's next for BookBag

I plan to reach out to a few different schools to gauge interest and see if this kind of tool would be useful to them. I got direct feedback from a teacher who tested it for a couple of days and noted that he could very easily integrate and make use of an app like this in his classroom.
