Inspiration

I began my journey working in education at 17. While helping students with coding, I noticed many struggled with reading, especially at the Elementary grade levels. This prompted me to research Florida's reading levels. After the pandemic, when nationwide test scores dropped, I knew I wanted to create a gamified reading solution, offering rewards for literacy.

What it does

Book Buddies utilizes advanced APIs and AI to tailor book recommendations directly from the Open AI database. Recommendations are personalized based on genre, reading timeline, and the user's school affiliation. Upon reading completion, users take quizzes, with two attempts to achieve a minimum 80% score. Successfully doing so earns them redeemable points, which can be exchanged for gift cards at B&N, Scholastic Book Fair, and Amazon Kindle after completing 10 books and their respective quizzes.

How we built it

Integration of OpenAI for Book Recommendations: We integrated OpenAI, a cutting-edge AI platform renowned for its natural language processing capabilities, to enhance Book Buddies' core functionality. OpenAI was leveraged to recommend books tailored to users' preferences and reading goals based on their input prompts. When users provided information about their preferred genre, reading timeline, and school affiliation, OpenAI's language models processed this data to generate personalized book recommendations.

Data Flow: The data flow between Book Buddies and OpenAI was carefully designed to ensure a seamless and secure integration. User inputs were securely transmitted to OpenAI's servers, where the recommendation models processed the data. The generated book recommendations were then returned to Book Buddies, ready to be presented to the users.

User Experience Enhancement: The integration of OpenAI significantly enhanced the user experience by providing accurate and personalized book suggestions. It allowed users to receive tailored recommendations that align with their reading preferences and goals, making their reading journey more engaging and enjoyable.

Ongoing Optimization: Continuous optimization of the OpenAI integration was a key focus during development. We fine-tuned the models and algorithms to improve the accuracy and relevance of book recommendations. Regular updates ensured that Book Buddies users always received the best reading suggestions.
