Inspiration
The dot com bubble, and the ridiculousness of early 2000's personal assistants.
What it does
A Bloomberg terminal-inspired trading application, allowing the player to attempt to profit from historical daily trading data from 2000-2003. The player attempts to beat a "safe investment", for this we used the return given by 1-year US treasury bonds during that time span.
During this, the player also deals with their helper - the infamous Y2K assistant BonziBuddy, who helps them make investment decisions.
How we built it
Pure blood, sweat, tears and Monster. Made in Pygame, with no vibe coding (even though it might look better if we did), with Git as version control.
Challenges we ran into
We really should have made an OOP diagram and scoped our project properly to stop the encroachment of spaghettification, maybe a bit more planning would have helped, but we somehow linked it all together without any circular imports.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Applied and implemented actionable historical trading data for 8 top stocks on various US stock exchanges.
- Implemented a "live" news system, displaying key news insights for the historical day, allowing the user to understand the impact of the dot com burst, while attempting to make money.
- Developed it without vibe coding
- Properly planned out a fully functioning Bloomberg terminal inspired GUI.
What we learned
Plan more! even for hackathons, it will always help - even if you're just hacking something together
What's next for Bonzi's Big Bubble
A life of stagnation probably, it serves as a fun educational tool, but it probably won't see the light of day again outside the occasional demo
