Inspiration

All things being equal, the difference between happy and successful kids and those that end up getting in trouble may have to do with the education and motivation. Do they learn things that enable them to do good things? Is the motivation to do good greater than the alternative?

I want to help our youth learn to do good, be rewarded for doing good and build a better society.

The Challenge

The challenge we've selected to tackle is Enhancing Children’s Resilience to Adversity in Puerto Rico.

The problem

With all the challenging things happening in their environment, Puerto Rican youth needs a way to build resilience, helping them bounce back, improve their well being and break the cycle of negativity. A safe and positive environment not only prevents negative mental health outcomes, but creates a foundation upon which to build a better society.

The Solution

The solution consists of...

  1. User-friendly tools and culturally relevant resources to promote resilience in Puerto Rican youth (ages 12 to 17). *These resources exist in [The Way To Happiness(https://www.thewaytohappiness.org/), a secular/moral code with principles that lead to happiness.
  2. a blockchain-based platform to capture:
  3. the evidence of studying these resources
  4. the good deeds performed (i.e. as a result of applying what they learned).
  5. a smart contract to provide compensation for these actions in the form of a crypto token (Bonum)
  6. exchanging these Bonum into fiat or other tokens is outside of the scope of our solution.

What it does

The solution fosters learning and doing good deeds through a rewards model.

Flow 0 - Enrollment and Login

  1. A user registers/logs onto the Bonum site/app upon login he is taken to his home page.
  2. If this is their first time, or the user hasn't taken a precept course, a list of precepts is presented, else he is is taken to his home page.

Flow 1 - Learning

  1. The user enrolls in the precept course and takes the it. After studying the material he takes a test to confirm his understanding. Any missing questions are reviewed and the user takes the test until obtaining a perfect score.
  2. After successfully completing the course, an NFT is minted to capture the completion. This NFT can later be used by the user to request a reward for this positive action.

Flow 2 - Doing

  1. The user performs a positive action as a result of applying a precept from the way to happiness.
  2. The user logs on to the Bonum site/app and is taken to his home page.
  3. The user selects "Show Doing Good"
  4. The user logs the positive action. Additional confirmation is done to ensure this is not a fake entry.
  5. After successfully verifying the positive action, an NFT is minted to capture the completion of this action. This NFT can later be used by the user to request a reward for this positive action.

Flow 3 - Being Rewarded

  1. The user logs on to the site/app and is taken to his home page.
  2. The user selects "Be Rewarded"
  3. The user selects a positive action for which he wants to be rewarded.
  4. The user sets the amount of Bonum he would like to receive for this positive action.

How we built it

We built a prototype for the Bonum concept using Wix for the landing page and Figma for the mobile App. We plan to build the web app using REACT/Node.JS/PostgreSQL. For the blockchain portion we plan to use an Ethereum based blockchain solution like Waterfall to reduce transaction costs (more research is needed in this area)

Challenges we ran into

Choosing a challenge for which to build solution. Some issues rending the Figma prototype. Determining the boundary between off chain and on chain functionality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • In a very short time we've defined a concept, created a draft for the white paper, a landing page and a landing page and a prototype for the motile site/app.
  • In addition, we feel very happy to embark on a solution that puts blockchain solutions that can drive the creation of a happy, savvy and resilient youth to improve the future of our society.

What we learned

  • That when the problem is known and the technology is available, creating a viable solution, even solo, can be seamless.

What's next for Bonum

  • More user research.
  • Building a working prototype for the web/mobile app.
  • Selecting a suitable blockchain platform to build the blockchain part.
  • Rolling an alpha version to learn, evolve and improve.
