boltID: The Beginning of Trust

Inspiration

It started with a shared observation: the internet was starting to feel hollow. As two engineers and a product manager from the fintech industry, we'd spent our careers building secure, high-stakes systems. We were captivated by the explosive rise of Agentic AI, but we also saw the flip side: a "bot-first" world where every interaction was shadowed by the question, "Is this real?" We saw the downstream effects firsthand—billions lost to ad fraud, financial systems targeted by sophisticated bots, and a creeping digital loneliness as authentic human connection became harder to find. We knew the solution wasn't a better wall to keep bots out, but a better foundation to let humans in. That was the spark for boltID.

What it does

boltID is a trust layer for the internet. It provides a universal "Proof-of-Personhood" ID that allows any human to verify their identity once, securely and privately, in under 60 seconds. For individuals, it's a key to a more authentic web, free from endless CAPTCHAs and fake accounts. For enterprises, it's the ultimate tool to onboard real, verified users, eliminating bot-driven fraud, securing platforms, and building genuine communities. It replaces ambiguity with certainty, allowing businesses and users to interact with confidence.

How we built it

We knew that to build a foundation for the entire internet, we had to use components that were themselves foundational and trusted. We built boltID as a technology stack for trust, choosing best-in-class solutions for each layer:

• Liveness Detection: We use AWS Rekognition for its military-grade, independently-verified security to serve as the bedrock of our system, ensuring that the person behind the screen is real and present.
• Identity Verification & Ledger: We chose Algorand for its fast, carbon-negative, and secure blockchain. This allows us to store an immutable, anonymous record of personhood that is both tamper-proof and transparent.
• Privacy: We committed to Zero-Knowledge Proofs, allowing us to verify a user's identity without ever having to reveal the sensitive personal data used to create the verification. This solves the core paradox of the modern internet: the need for both proof and privacy.
• Infrastructure: The entire platform is built for global scale and rapid iteration using StackBlitz for AI-powered development, Supabase for a secure backend, and Netlify for edge-optimized deployment.

Challenges we ran into

Our greatest challenge was the user experience. We gave ourselves a seemingly impossible goal: the entire verification process had to take less than 60 seconds. If proving you're human is a chore, no one will do it. This constraint forced us to obsessively optimize every single step, from edge-optimized inference to the intuitive UI. Our other major challenge was implementing Zero-Knowledge Proofs in a way that was both cryptographically secure and performant enough for a seamless user flow, which required deep research and novel engineering solutions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of solving the "60-second gauntlet." Designing a flow that can securely verify a user's liveness and generate a blockchain-based token in under a minute felt like a magical achievement. Our successful implementation of Zero-Knowledge Proofs is another key accomplishment, as it provides a real, working solution to the privacy-versus-proof dilemma. Finally, we are proud of building this complete, end-to-end demonstration, proving that a more trusted, human-first internet is not just a dream, but an achievable reality.

What we learned

Our biggest lesson was shifting our perspective from being "anti-bot" to "pro-human." Our initial impulse was to build the ultimate bot detector, but we learned that the real opportunity wasn't just stopping the bad; it was about enabling the good. We realized that the future of digital trust didn't lie in building better gates, but in giving every human a universal key. This insight transformed our product philosophy and clarified our mission.

What's next for BoltID

We believe we are at a critical inflection point for the internet. Our next step is to partner with the platforms, communities, and enterprises that are ready to build a human-first future. We are actively seeking design partners and early adopters who want to integrate boltID as a foundational trust layer to solve their fraud, community, and user verification challenges. We are focused on getting this tool into the hands of the builders who need it most, because we're not just building a product; we're building the beginning of trust.
