Inspiration
This project stems from the idea of the rough life of a college student constantly juggling classes, assignments, extracurriculars, work, and social commitments. It's easy to forget when you or someone else commits to a task. We wanted to build a tool that makes keeping track of these commitments easier and reduces the stress of remembering everything.
What it does
The Promise Tracker helps students keep track of commitments by identifying promises from text conversations and organizing them into a more manageable view. Instead of rereading long message threads to remember who promised what, users can paste a conversation and review the commitments that matter.
How we built it.
We built The Promise Tracker using React, TypeScript, and CSS to create an interface where users can manage promises and review commitments extracted from conversations. We integrated the Google Gemini API to analyze pasted text conversations, identify who made a promise, summarize the commitment, and determine its deadline when possible. We used structured JSON responses to turn the AI's results into organized promise drafts that users can review before saving. For the backend, we used Node.js and TypeScript to handle requests between the frontend and Gemini. We also integrated Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore for authentication and data storage, with Firebase Hosting and Cloud Functions configured for deployment. We used Git and GitHub to collaborate and manage our code throughout development.
Challenges we ran into
One of our challenges was figuring out how to reliably identify each person in a conversation. We had to consider the most efficient way to distinguish between participants and whether phone numbers would be the best identifiers. While phone numbers could help uniquely identify people, we also had to consider privacy, implementation complexity, and whether simpler identifiers would be sufficient. Finding an approach that was both reliable and efficient was an important part of designing The Promise Tracker.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of turning a relatable college-student problem into a practical tool. We created an interface designed around a real student need and worked toward making commitments easier to identify, review, and organize. The UNC student community always works together, and we are satisified with working towards helping those with everyday scheduling needs.
What we learned
We learned more about building a React and TypeScript application, designing a user-friendly interface, and collaborating on a shared codebase. We also explored how AI can help interpret natural language and turn everyday conversations into structured information. We gained more experienced with React and Firebase typescript
What's next for The Promise Tracker
We want to improve promise extraction, make deadlines and responsible people more accurate, and connect reviewed promises to a calendar or tracker. In the future, we'd also like to support additional messaging formats and make it easier for students to follow through on their commitments. Integrating this product to google calendar and making it into a mobile app would be well sought next steps.
