Inspiration

As a bird photographer, I don’t always have my camera with me when I spot a new bird I want to capture. I wanted a simple way to record the details—like where I saw the bird and what species it might be—so we created Boiler Bird Pro.

What it does

Boiler Bird Pro lets users log bird sightings by entering details such as color, size, characteristics, and location. It also allows you to search through your past logs to find birds with specific traits, making it easy to revisit and compare observations.

How we built it

We started by building the website with Java and HTML, then improved the user interface using Cursor. For the final version, we leveraged ChatGPT to generate prompts that helped us make the design more professional, clean, and user-friendly with subtle enhancements.

Challenges we ran into

Transitioning between different project setups and tools

Staying aligned as a team while using different IDEs

Formatting and structuring code consistently

Overcoming our limited coding experience to build a functional site

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a finished website that includes all the features we set out to build. It’s simple, effective, and provides a foundation for more advanced functionality in the future.

What we learned

We learned how to collaborate using GitHub, improve our coding practices, and adapt quickly to new tools while working on a shared project.

What's next for Boiler Bird Pro

Implementing a bird recognition feature that can identify species from photos

Expanding beyond Purdue and Indiana to create a global community of bird observers
