Inspiration
One of the biggest issues that young girls face in this era is combating societal expectations of their appearance. While brainstorming, we decided to keep with the major themes of kindness and female empowerment. The purpose of this app was to teach little girls about body positivity and self-love in a fun and interactive manner so that they never have to worry about feeling anything less than beautiful.
Original Plan
Design a game that incorporates augmented reality throughout several “quests,” where each quest represents a lesson. The storyline involves the user waking up and going through various tasks throughout the day, such as going to school.
The first quest involves the user seeing themselves on the phone screen as various thought bubbles appear onto the screen. Some of these are self-deprecating thoughts, such as “I look weird”, while others are positive, such as “I feel great.” Implementing AR, the user would be able to “swap” away the negative thought bubbles.
The second quest involves the user helping a friend at school erase negative thoughts after they receive a bad grade on their homework. This helps the user practice positive self-talk and encourage others to do so as well.
What it does
Our application aims to help young girls, around elementary school age, with body positivity, starting with self-love. Our vision was to have multiple quests or stories where girls can play fun games while simultaneously learning to love themselves just the way they are.
How we built it
To build our applications, we started off by using Figma for prototyping and wireframing and moved to Unity and Visual Studio for developing and coding out an application.
Challenges I ran into
Originally, we wanted to use the AR and have the user swipe away negative thought bubbles and bring in positive ones, however, we ran into issues with Unity's camera module. This cost us a lot of time and forced us to try and change.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We’re proud to be first-time hackathon participants, as well as learning Unity and some C# for the first time. We were also proud of how we were able to quickly adapt to our challenges. For example, we switched from using the AR technology to implementing an open camera feature that still let’s the user see themselves in the game (this was not pictured in the demo, it was finished after the demo was complete.)
What I learned
All team members learned to use Unity, C#, and the echoAR platform for the first time! We also learned how to collaborate virtually and used Github for the first time. Furthermore, we learned a lot about app development and teaching self love particularly to an audience as young as the elementary and middle school girls we were targeting.
What's next for Body Positivity Game - Self Love
Other quests will highlight body positivity as well as body diversity through the inclusion of diverse characters, including disabled characters and characters of varying skin tones and body weight- something that is lacking in modern day gaming. Another quest will encourage exercise through play, incorporating an augmented reality game to make exercise something that is enjoyable rather than a punishment.
