Bobo the Baboon's Personal Portfolio

A Flask Portfolio Site for Week 1 of the MLH 22.SUM Production Engineering Track Orientation Hackathon. Showcases basic Flask and Git/Git practices using Bobo the baboon as our super fellow!

Inspiration

Bobo is the coolest fellow, and he wants a place on the internet to showcase his projects and experiences. Together, we helped Bobo create his personal portfolio that connects him to his target audience of friends, recruiters, and future collaborators.

What it does

Bobo's website is the ideal combination of professionalism and personality. We share everything Bobo would talk about on his resume including his work experience and education, but we also have an "about me" section and a page dedicated to hobbies to make Bobo stand out. We also have Bobo pictured in his snazziest attire to show recruiters he means business.

How we built it

We used python's flask framework for jinja templates as well as basic HTML & CSS for positioning and styling. We also integrated a google maps API to show Bobo's adventures across the world.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenge we dealt with was the learning curve for flask and jinja as well as git collaboration. Many of us were new to using the framework and learning the fundamentals was challenging on occasion. Some of us also underwent a git/github learning curve. Ultimately these were resolved but we certainly could have made better progress without these blockers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learning and implementing flask and jinja on the fly, which will certainly be a useful tool for future projects! The map integration is a key feature of our site that we are also proud of as we feel like it makes Bobo stand out as a citizen of the world.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how to implement software engineering principles of modularity in our stylizing with jinja and how flask can deploy a server in roughly seven simple lines of code. A greater lesson was learned with respect to workflow; understanding good technical communication skills (both online and over discord calls) as well as github communciation, including making issues and PRs with appropriate communication.

Up next for Bobo, we will add some more pages including those for his blog and a contact-me page. We also intend on fleshing out more dynamic styling and animations for his site in order to enhance the user experience and make Bobo's website a better reflection of his personality.
