Inspiration
I wanted to create a tower defense game that felt bright and playful instead of grim or militaristic. The idea of controlling a moving boat as your base, while defending against mischievous octopuses in a sunny tropical world, gave the genre a fresh and charming twist.
What it does
Buoy Battle is a top-down tower defense game where you sail a moving boat through vibrant waters, deploying buoyant defenses to fend off waves of playful octopuses. You can upgrade your boat over time from a simple dinghy into a powerful vessel with more defense slots and better stats.
How I built it
I focused on creating an accessible mobile experience with clear visuals and intuitive controls. The core gameplay combines boat movement with strategic buoy placement, while the boat progression system gives players a rewarding sense of growth.
Challenges I ran into
Balancing the moving boat mechanic with meaningful strategic depth was challenging. I also worked to make sure each octopus type felt distinct while keeping the game approachable and fun.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of how cohesive the visual style feels and how naturally the boat upgrades change the way the game plays. The charming tone makes failure feel lighthearted rather than punishing.
What I learned
This project taught me how much tone and art direction can transform a familiar genre. I also learned the importance of clear visual communication in a top-down mobile game.
What's next for Buoy Battle
I plan to add more boat types, environmental hazards, and daily challenges to extend engagement and strategic depth.
