💡 Inspiration Let's be honest: new hires often get stuck on day two with things like Docker configurations, but they're usually too afraid to ask for help. Most companies try to solve this with invasive "Bossware" that records screens and completely destroys trust. We built Boardy to be an onboarding copilot that lets managers know exactly when to step in and offer support, without ever spying on their team.
⚙️ What it does Boardy works quietly in the background, analyzing event metadata from everyday tools like GitHub and Microsoft 365—strictly no screen recording involved. Using Gemini 1.5 Flash, it generates two distinct daily summaries:
- For HR: A simple, jargon-free progress update.
- For Managers: A technical blocker report (e.g., "Maya is stuck on authentication; we recommend a 15-minute pair programming session").
🛠️ How we built it Frontend: We used Next.js 14 and Tailwind CSS v4 to create a calming, "earthtone" interface that feels welcoming rather than corporate. Backend & Database: Next.js API Routes connected to a PostgreSQL database on Neon.tech via Prisma. AI Engine: Google Gemini 1.5 Flash. We batched daily event logs directly into its massive context window, which allowed us to bypass the need for a complex vector database entirely.
⚠️ Challenges & Accomplishments The Microsoft Graph API Trap: Microsoft 365 webhooks require an immediate plain-text validationToken response before they will send any data. Figuring out that specific quirk cost us hours of debugging! Prioritizing Security: Instead of taking the easy route with a tool like Zapier, we built strict HMAC SHA-256 verification from scratch for our GitHub webhooks. A Last-Minute UX Pivot: Our original interface featured a giant "100/100 score" that felt a bit too much like surveillance. We completely refactored the wording and layout at the 11th hour to focus on "Onboarding Health," and even managed to hit a 0ms layout shift in the process.
🚀 What's next We want to integrate ElevenLabs to transform these daily reports into 30-second audio briefs. That way, managers can simply listen to their team's onboarding updates during their morning commute.
