Inspiration

As a lifelong board game enthusiast, I grew frustrated with how hard it was to find games that fit my friend group’s unique needs—too many options, no easy way to filter by size or playtime. I wanted to build a tool that made discovery effortless, for casual game nights or serious hobbyists alike.

What it does

BGR Community lets users filter 50k+ board games by group size, playtime, difficulty, and genre. It offers personalized recommendations, a global top 100 list, detailed game pages with rating/review features, and local event discovery tailored to location and event type.

How we built it

I started with wireframing in Figma to map user flows, then built the frontend with React and TailwindCSS for responsive design. I coded the recommendation algorithm to prioritize matching group preferences, and used JSON for mock game/event data structure. The UI was optimized for quick, intuitive filtering and browsing.

Challenges we ran into

Crafting the recommendation logic to balance multiple filters (player count, genre, difficulty) was tricky—ensuring results felt personalized but not overly narrow. Also, designing the event page to handle location filtering across 20+ regions required careful data structuring to avoid slow load times.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The platform’s seamless filter combination works flawlessly, and the user rating system updates in real time—creating an engaging, interactive experience. We also nailed the UI consistency across game cards and pages, making navigation intuitive for all users.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of frontend state management (for session-based preferences) and algorithmic logic for personalized recommendations. I also learned how to design for accessibility while keeping the interface fun and game-focused.

What's next for This project

We plan to add advanced AI-driven recommendations, integrate real board game database APIs, launch a mobile-responsive version, and connect with local game cafes to populate real event data. We’re also exploring a premium tier for ad-free browsing and custom game night planning tools.
