Inspiration
The idea all started listing off our favorite childhood games and not having a clue how to only pick one. After some deliberation, we decided why couldn't we have it all?
What it does
Board Game Brawl is an RPG that uses iconic characters of games such as Hungry Hungry Hippos, Chess, and of course, Snakes and Ladders.
Each enemy has been meticulously created frame by frame and each object gave us new issues. However, to see the demo, in the end, was well worth it.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest issues we ran into was sharing our files properly. Due to the way Gamemaker Studio imports items, you can place an item in a folder but the studio wouldn't acknowledge the resource. To fix this, we had to go into the overall game file and add the asset paths directly. We had a least 70 different assets that all needed proper locations.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of and What I learned
I am most proud of the way that my team was so willing to take a chance on something new. Gamemaker Studio is something that I have no experience with and learning how to use everything with my team was amazing. In addition, creating 8 bit Characters was completely new to me. It took a tremendous amount of time and but seeing the end result was worth it. Joy
Although I always had a passion for games and game theory, I have never undertaken a game development project beforehand. Creating this project with Gamemaker Studio has been a learning experience for me, and I am happy with the opportunity, and being in such a great team! I'm grateful for all the help i received from my teammates, and seeing a working prototype for the game puts a smile on my face. Matthew
What's next for Board Game Brawl
Next, we would like to work on finishing the fighting events and adding new characters for players to fight!
