Inspiration
Adobe owns the canvas. Not the memory of what happened on it.
Why This Is Breaking at Scale (User Reality) People already know documents can’t carry meaning. “So they compensate. They post links on YouTube to explain the logic behind the duplication of files when they could think about new ideas. They leave comments when they could encode the decision. They go to the older versions just to understand, not to edit.”
Introducing: Live-Docs
On the guiding principle of:
A document does not deliver its purpose by existing. It delivers its purpose by being understood
What it does
This is an add-on to Adobe Express which helps convert static creative files into live documents.
It introduces:
Intent-based document versioning – Named checkpoints: why, not just when
Intelligence regarding blind spots, repeated revisions, and unresolved areas within the document
“Content that Transforms” - Links → flowcharts, Text → visual logic Weblinks → structured understanding. Context that remains alive- Old thinking accompanies the document. Even if the team members shift
How we built it
The project was developed as an Adobe Express extension to be integrated within the editor itself. Front End captures the document usage and provides a refined interface for versioning awareness, while the back End manages metadata, versions, and analytics. Advanced analyses are specifically designed to be presented in a separate canvas to not disrupt the workflow of creativity. Nothing was added first. Everything was added last. Failure modes first. Documents that break when working in a team. People using memory, comments, and duplicates to work around it. Data leaking out of the document to a link, a chat, a person.
So we designed LiveCanvas from first principles.
- Separation of Creation and Intelligence
Creation has
“We’ve kept Adobe Express fast and clean. Version reviews, insights, and reasoning are all housed in a canvas layer,” explains Ondrej Loefler, Director of Product Management at Adobe. “Creation
- Intent-First
Versions are made only when there is a change in meaning. In the evidence-based system, what changed why it mattered what the decision entails This makes history into memory.
- Content Interpretation Layers
A system that understands and responds to inputs, not just remembers them. Text input is translated into logic structure charts. Links (YT, web pages, docs) are translated into flowcharts
The text is no longer looking outward for clarity. There is clarity inside.
Behavioral Cues, Not Vanity Analytics Rather than monitoring activity, we monitor the level of friction. Repeated ReWrites non-excluded sections unresolved edits From here, "LiveCanvas identifies the blind spots and context misses, all done quietly without disrupting the workflow."
Reader-Aware Documents
The canvas adapts to how the document is consumed. first-time reader → context surfaced returning contributor → changes highlighted decision review → intention high-lighted
The document merits comprehension. Built with One Constraint This means that the document should still be intelligible if the author disappears.
Challenges we ran into
Parallelly creating different components and then combining them into a unified extension was a task in itself. Creating a UI design that is simplistic for every user in spite of the complex logic was a process in itself. We also needed to be mindful of when analytics should be shown and how much information should be displayed in the creation and insight views sections.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built an Adobe Express add-on that works from scratch. Successfully combined several features into one smooth workflow. Designed an intuitive UI for non-technical users. Designed a scalable infrastructure to accommodate future analytics and traceability functionalities
What we learned
We learned how to take complex concepts of collaboration and translate them into enjoyable experiences. This particular project helped us learn more about development of add-ons in Adobe Express, prioritization, and developing systems with tight timelines in hackathons. Most significantly, however, is learning to balance our product vision and implementation.
What's next for Live-Docs
To make it accessible and scalable: users download images, flowcharts, and converted visuals large videos → flowcharts are supported up to 3 versions are available on the free plan. Advanced usage and increased limits are unlocked with premium.
