Inspiration
We are big fans of Adventure Time and of BMO and decided that we wanted to bring them into the real world. Two members of our team come from creative backgrounds, meaning that we had the means to both build the casing for BMO and create an interface for people to interact with them.
What it does
BMO will talk to you with voicelines from the show and will also let you play a game with them: a replication of the game "Guardians of Sunshine" which is seen in the show.
How we built it
The main casing uses cardboard with the arms and legs being created out of foam clay. The screen used for BMO is a Nintendo Switch that runs Linux as we needed a screen big enough to make a good sized model. We extracted all of BMO's voicelines from across the 10 seasons of the show to provide people varied conversations.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge that we ran into with this project was the ability to switch between the different 'modes' that we had planned to have for BMO, which was the game mode and a 'talk' mode where BMO would be able to respond to what you had said.
We had written the two modes in different languages and so trying to meld them together was pretty much impossible, especially at the end of the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
BMO's model looks really good and is accurate to the show! This is also true for the game that you can play on BMO as well! The
What we learned
Make sure to remember DuPont wires when doing a hardware hack.
What's next for BMO
BMO will have a new home (and face) with one of our teammates.
