Bluff or Buss: My Journey of Creation
Inspiration
The inspiration for Bluff or Buss came from cherished childhood memories. When I was little, my grandfather and I would play a similar bluffing game that revolved around wit, strategy, and the thrill of uncovering the truth. Those moments were filled with laughter and suspense, and I wanted to recreate that feeling in a virtual space where others could share similar joy. Sadly he passed away and wasn’t able to experience this game.
What I Learned
Building Bluff or Buss taught me a lot about game design and development.
- Gameplay Mechanics: I learned how to design bluffing and guessing mechanics that are simple yet engaging.
- Player Interaction: Crafting an immersive experience required understanding how players communicate and strategize in competitive games.
- Scripting Techniques: I improved my skills in scripting, especially in creating dynamic and interactive elements.
How I Built It
I built Bluff or Buss using the tools and resources available in Horizon Worlds.
- Conceptualization: I started by outlining the rules and flow of the game, ensuring it stayed true to the essence of the game I played as a child.
- World Design: I created an environment that would immerse players in the gameplay, focusing on simplicity and functionality.
- Scripting: I implemented features like the random assignment of the hidden money, gun mechanics, and interactive dialogue prompts to enhance gameplay.
- Testing and Iteration: I conducted multiple playtests to refine the mechanics and address any issues, ensuring a smooth and fun experience for players.
Challenges Faced
The journey wasn’t without its hurdles:
- Balancing Gameplay: Ensuring that the game was fair and engaging for all players required multiple iterations.
- Technical Limitations: There were constraints within the Horizon Worlds platform that challenged my initial ideas, requiring creative workarounds.
- Bug Fixes: Debugging the script to make sure the mechanics worked seamlessly under different scenarios took considerable time and effort.
Final Thoughts
Building Bluff or Buss was both a nostalgic and rewarding experience. It reminded me of the joy of creativity and the importance of persistence in overcoming challenges. I’m proud to share a piece of my childhood with others, transforming a simple game I once played with my grandfather into an interactive virtual experience that brings people together.
