Inspiration
I was watching a documentary about marine life a few days ago. It stressed on how plastic trash has the potential to kill over 50 million ocean-dwelling species. That's when I realised I wanted to work on a project that involved bringing the condition and safety of aquatic species to the attention of the public. Up to 5 trillion pieces of plastic could be floating in the water. By 2050, the amount of plastic produced will have overtaken all of the fish in the oceans if current production rates are maintained. Plastic garbage has a direct influence on over 800 coastal and marine species, according to a study, due to entanglement, ingestion, or habitat loss. It is very important that we raise awareness on this since our very lives are dependent on it.
What it does
The objective of BlueZone is to raise public awareness about the serious impact that plastic pollution brings to marine life. We're committed to raising awareness, encouraging people to sign petitions, and sharing information on the overuse and misuse of plastic, as well as solutions to the plastic pollution problem. We support efforts and regulatory changes aimed at reducing excessive plastic production.
How we built it
I did a lot of research on marine and plastic pollution and tried to find information on the intersection between the two. I used HTML and CSS to build the website and went with the blue minimal theme to represent the ocean. To build the Plastic Quiz and Fact Generator I used JavaScript. The Qoom platform was also incredibly useful and user-friendly.
Challenges we ran into
Getting all of the resources for the Action page was a bit of a challenge. Coding the Plastic Quiz and using JavaScript was also a struggle for me. Most importantly, there was a strict deadline and I never imagined I'd be able to complete this project on time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of myself for being able to research and code the full website solo! In such a short period of time, I was able to finish off the research paper and pitch as well.
What we learned
I learned a lot of things about the marine life. I learned how to make my website more user-friendly by using Javascript. It was a challenge to learn everything on my own, but it was well worth it!
What's next for BlueZone
I intend to publish this simple web application to Google Play Store/and App Store. I hope to partner with numerous organisations by the end of this year to arrange a clean-up plastic drive on neighbouring roads, parks and beaches. I also intend to add a donation section. 100% of the funds raised will proceed to non-profit organisations that aid in the conservation of aquatic wildlife.
