Blue Gold
Inspiration
Freshwater ecosystems are among the most valuable yet overlooked natural resources. Rapid urbanization, pollution, and climate change have made it increasingly difficult to monitor water quality and ecosystem health in real time. We were inspired by the OneAquaHealth vision of connecting ecosystem health, biodiversity, and human well-being. Our goal was to create a solution that empowers citizens to actively participate in environmental monitoring while providing meaningful insights to researchers, policymakers, and local communities.
What it does
Blue Gold is an AI-powered citizen science platform designed to monitor and protect urban freshwater ecosystems.
The platform enables citizens to:
- Report water conditions through a mobile-friendly interface.
- Upload photos and environmental observations.
- Receive AI-generated assessments of potential ecosystem risks.
- View ecosystem health scores and trends through an interactive dashboard.
Blue Gold aggregates citizen-generated data, environmental indicators, and climate-related information to generate actionable insights. The platform helps identify pollution hotspots, detect ecosystem stress, and support early-warning systems for environmental risks.
How we built it
We built Blue Gold using:
- AI and machine learning models for environmental risk assessment.
- A cloud-based database for storing observations and ecosystem data.
- Interactive dashboards for visualization and decision support.
- Geolocation services for mapping freshwater monitoring activities.
- Citizen science workflows that encourage public participation and data contribution.
The system integrates environmental observations with analytics to create a comprehensive view of freshwater ecosystem health.
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring the reliability and quality of citizen-generated data.
- Designing a user-friendly interface that encourages participation from non-technical users.
- Combining environmental, climate, and community data into a unified framework.
- Creating meaningful insights while maintaining scalability and performance.
- Addressing interoperability challenges between different data sources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed a functional prototype that supports community-driven ecosystem monitoring.
- Successfully integrated AI-based analysis with citizen science contributions.
- Created an intuitive dashboard for visualizing ecosystem health indicators.
- Promoted awareness of freshwater sustainability through accessible technology.
- Aligned our solution with the One Health and OneAquaHealth principles.
What we learned
Throughout the project, we learned:
- The importance of community participation in environmental monitoring.
- How AI can enhance ecosystem assessment when combined with human observations.
- The challenges of working with environmental datasets and data quality issues.
- The value of interdisciplinary approaches that connect technology, ecology, and public health.
- How digital platforms can foster long-term environmental stewardship.
What's next for Blue Gold
Our future plans include:
- Integrating real-time IoT water quality sensors.
- Expanding AI capabilities for species and pollution detection from images.
- Adding gamification features to increase citizen engagement.
- Developing predictive models for ecosystem risk forecasting.
- Collaborating with municipalities, researchers, and environmental organizations.
- Scaling the platform to support freshwater ecosystems in cities worldwide.
Blue Gold aims to become a comprehensive ecosystem intelligence platform that empowers communities, supports evidence-based decision-making, and contributes to healthier, more resilient freshwater environments.
