Blue Bot

Inspiration

We were inspired by an interactive bot made for one of our university mascots and decided to modify this for Blue!

What it does

From our inspiration, we decided to expand on this idea by adding 3 meters that users need to be aware of: Hunger, Affection, and Hype. These meters decrease slowly over time and can be increased by user interaction. To increase hunger, users can give Blue Bot a treat using !btreat. This can be done for affection and hype using !bpet and !bcheer respectively. When these meters fall too low, the bot will issue warnings so that users remember to take care of Blue. Additionally, there are so other mechanics to this bot. When hunger falls to 0, Blue faints and remains unresponsive for 15 minutes. Upon reviving, all his meters are at half capacity. When his affection falls too low, he chance of accepting an interaction falls from 100% to 60% and decreases in intervals as his affection lowers. When his hype falls below 50% he becomes sad and all of his interaction lines are sad. Once his hype falls to 35%, the hunger and affection bars fall two times faster.

Users can check Blue's current stats using !bstats. They also can see all his commands using !bhelp. Server admins can set Blue's channel using !bstart. Additionally, Blue can send selfies using !bselfie ! Try the bot with the invite link below!

How we built it

For this bot, we used node.js along with discord.js. We also utilized the postgresql database.

Challenges we ran into

We initially planned on doing another project, but we realized on Saturday morning that it was too ambitious and we would not have time to finish it. Thus we had to pivot to this project instead. However, we had a ton of fun building this bot and are definitely still happy with the final product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to create this bot and have it work in the way we intended to. Two of us are also very new to coding so we are proud that we were able to help work on this.

What we learned

The two of us who are new learned a bit about coding Discord embeds and creating functions for the bot. All three of us also learned how to work as a team and adapt when initial plans had to change.

What's next for Blue Bot

We think Blue Bot could be a great addition to the Team Liquid server to boost user interaction (and Blue plushie sales!). We may add more interactive commands to the bot in the future such as games or an interactive text story. We also plan on going back to our original idea that we weren't able to complete and creating that as well!
