Inspiration
We were inspired by the possibility of reducing the risk of people getting sick by helping communities communicate earlier. Bloomy is built around the idea that individual engagement, like quick daily check-ins and local reporting, can help prevent small health anomalies from becoming larger outbreaks or possible pandemics.
What We Learned
We learned how important it is to combine personal health data, community signals, and public health workflows in a way that is useful but still safe and explainable. We also learned more about building voice-based health interactions with Alexa and designing AI support without making medical diagnoses.
How We Built It
We built Bloomy as a web app with daily health check-ins, symptom reporting, wearable-style vitals, local risk mapping, AI-assisted summaries, doctor/public health review flows, and an Alexa check-in endpoint. The backend stores check-ins and supports Alexa conversations, while the app uses rule-based triage and AI summaries to generate safe next steps.
Second Nonprofit Project
We built this project speciacally to address the drop out rates in the culinary workforce training program. This
Challenges
The biggest challenges were authentication, keeping development moving continuously as the app grew larger, and working with Alexa, especially syncing the skill flow with the backend endpoint.
