Inspiration

Bloomy the hummingbird flies to every glowing flower, then forgets which garden it wanted to feed. Most "digital wellbeing" tools either block everything or score you. BloomByte does neither. It is practice for deciding which signals deserve you now, and in which context.

What it does

The Notification Garden is the practice lab:

  • Six fictional notifications land in your garden, for example "Emergency call from a close relative", "Store campaign", "Question from project team" and "24 messages in chat group".
  • For each one you choose Accessible now, When selected or Can remain silent.
  • You do this under a context such as Work time. Counters show how many signals are in the now, later and silent groups.
  • The app says these "are not focus capacity scores, but rule numbers you have selected".
  • Your choices become a written plan that you then set up yourself in your phone's settings.
  • BloomByte does not read your real notifications, block apps or change device settings.

The course: 12 lessons, covering:

  • the difference between loud and important;
  • three context rules and an exception for urgent contacts;
  • asking "why did I open this app?";
  • a small pause before automatic scrolling;
  • work alerts without always-on availability;
  • reshaping rules when life changes.

Other features: 19 languages, and no account is needed. BloomByte is general self-help education about digital attention. It never labels you or your phone use.

Free and Premium:

  • Free: the garden and lessons 1–6, with ads.
  • BloomByte Premium: an auto-renewing subscription, monthly or annual. It unlocks lessons 7–12, the encrypted backup and the reminder/calendar export, and removes all ads.
  • Trial: both plans start with a 7-day free trial.

How we built it

  • App shell: an offline web app wrapped for Android with Capacitor.
  • Plugins: @revenuecat/purchases-capacitor, @capacitor-community/admob, @capacitor/local-notifications, @capacitor/filesystem, @capacitor/share, @capacitor/browser and @capacitor/app.

RevenueCat

  • Entitlement: premium.
  • Offering: default, which is the current offering, with the packages $rc_monthly and $rc_annual.
  • Products: bloombyte_monthly:monthly and bloombyte_yearly:yearly. Both base plans carry the Play offer trial7 (7 days free, ACTIVE).
  • Paywall: shows the store's localized prices.
  • Entitlement check: the entitlement is re-read fresh once per process.

AdMob, free tier only

  • Banner: an adaptive banner, on the Home and Lessons screens only. There is never a banner in the garden.
  • Interstitial: only after a finished lesson, at most one in every three, and at least 3 minutes apart.
  • Consent: UMP consent comes first.
  • Premium: Premium removes all ads.

Build

  • Builds run in GitHub Actions.
  • The demo build was installed from Google Play (versionCode 1). Its web payload is identical, file for file (75 files), to the CI build of the uploaded bundle.

Challenges we ran into

  • No verdicts. A notification app slides easily into scoring your focus. The counters are labelled as your own rule numbers, not capacity scores, and the same alert may belong in a different place under a different context.
  • One strict check rejected all 19 languages. A shared validator required exactly three choices per lesson. We now run a build-time gate that checks every packaged language with the shipped validator and fails closed.
  • Billing needs the store build. A side-loaded copy of the same code got "billing unavailable" from Google Play. The Play-installed build loads both plans and the trial.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A notification plan the user writes, not one the app enforces.
  • A real 7-day trial on both plans, through one RevenueCat entitlement.

What's next for BloomByte

Ideas from the product notes, not promises: more contexts (caring, rest) and more sample signals.

Judges' access

  • Trial: open Settings (the top-right icon), scroll to Premium and choose either plan. Google Play shows a 7-day free trial, and cancelling before it ends means no charge.
  • Free without a trial: the garden and lessons 1–6.
  • Prices in the video: the recording used a Turkish Google Play account, so prices appear in TRY.
