Inspiration - Why Bloom?

We believe everyone should have easy access to the resources they need. Having on hand info about pertinent opportunities would benefit anyone in accomplishing their goals. An app like this would be revolutionary because we're connecting the world to unlimited, unknown resources around them. As three first generation Latina women, we understand the struggles of inequality and not having the resources you need available to you.

What it does

Adapts to the users needs and location to connect them with resources useful to their situation. This app will follow an algorithm based on what the user's preferences are, how much time they spend on a post, what they like, and resources near them. As human beings, we want others to succeed and be able to navigate the world with ease, so this app will cater to their needs.

How we built it

We built the app using Figma, Xcode, and Swift. We used Figma as a mock up for our ideas and then implemented that on Xcode and Swift.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into were technical issues on setting up development environments and unfamiliarity with application development. Because of the technical issues, some teammates were limited on the work they can do, but we pushed through and worked as team to create this amazing app. Additionally, our team wanted to try something new and different by using Swift and Xcode for app development. Again, it was difficult at first, but we persisted.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Accomplishments that we're proud of are learning app development and user interface design through Figma. Throughout this weekend, we had to learn a lot of new things to create our idea. We're very proud that we were able to work as a team and contribute important pieces that are fundamental to this project. By pushing ourselves to learn app development through Swift and Xcode and user interface design through Figma, we created something that we are proud of and nothing less.

What we learned

We learned a lot from this weekend with Black Wings Hack! We gained hands-on experience with Xcode, Swift, and Figma. We're proud of how quickly we learned to use these platforms and implement successfully to our project. We also learned that we should have fun in stressful situations. We attended different events throughout the hackathon and had fun with the Black Wings leaders, RTC staff, and other participants. From this experience, we understood what a team really means in a hackathon and highlighted the strengths of each individual team member to deliver our goal.

What's next for Bloom

The future for Bloom is going to be big! We are hoping to finalize the app design for clean up and make sure everything is fully functional. We're also planning to expand reach to other areas outside the United States. As well, we want to add a questionnaire about age, race, ethnicity, and certain status' (e.g. homeless) so the content on the app is specific to the user. Lastly, we want to implement some security features and have a verification system for deeply involved community members.
