Our Mental Health App Journey

Inspiration

Our journey began with a shared passion for mental health awareness. We recognized the significant impact of negative self-talk on individuals, particularly young adults. The idea of using a nurturing metaphor—a plant—to represent emotional well-being resonated with us. We wanted to create a fun, interactive platform that encourages positive self-affirmation and promotes mental resilience.

What We Learned

Throughout the development process, we gained valuable insights into:

  • User Engagement: The importance of creating an engaging user experience that resonates emotionally.
  • Mental Health Approaches: came up with creative approaches to mental health.
  • Team Collaboration: Effective communication and collaboration among team members were crucial for turning our vision into reality.

How We Built Our Project

We built our web-based app using:

- Languages: JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for the front-end development.

Our process involved brainstorming sessions to outline features, followed by coding and iterative testing to ensure a smooth user experience. We focused on gamifying the experience to motivate users to engage regularly.

Challenges Faced

One of our primary challenges was implementing sentiment analysis to evaluate user input. Unfortunately, none of the available APIs worked as expected. To overcome this, we devised a temporary solution by generating random numbers to simulate sentiment feedback while we continue to seek better tools. This experience taught us the importance of adaptability and creative problem-solving in the face of obstacles.

Conclusion

Our app not only aims to combat negative self-talk but also seeks to empower users to take control of their mental health in a fun and engaging way. We hope to continue evolving our project, addressing challenges, and making a positive impact in the mental health space.
